I am going on a cruise in July starting in Rome and going to Sicily, Athens, Turkey and Crete.

Reading about possible restrictions to bag size in some places i get the feeling my lowepro slingshot 202aw will be too big. I am looking for something smaller that will carry some of my gear.
I have a Canon T2i, 18-55mm, 50mm 1.8, ex430ii, 55-250mm. I will be purchasing a sigma 10-20 shortly.

Right now i would like to carry the camera, 18-55, 50mm and 10-20mm. Suggestions on a smaller bag that would fit that stuff would be great. Also would there be a reason to take the 55-250 and or the flash?

1st thoughts are the PacSafe CamSafe 100 but i cant tell if everything would fit.

I'll let Jon answer some of these questions. He went to Greece with his wife and it's clear that safety is important as many tourists get robbed if not careful. Get a good secure bag and then tie it to yourself. :) Really, though, the PacSafe products are very good.

I carried a Domke F-802 with the 720-230 insert through Greece and Italy. Only places I had to check it were in the National Museum of Archaeology in Athens; I pulled the extra lens out of the bag and put them in my jacket (2 cameras, 3 lenses and memory), and the Pitti Palace in Florence (no photography there at all). My wife had to check her backpack-style purse more than I had to check the camera bag. Practically no museums and churches will let you use the flash; if you take it, it'll be for outside or social photos. In Italy more than Greece many churches and museums won't even let you photograph (with the churches it seems to depend on the order that provides the staff).

Don't go with a backpack-style bag; get something you can keep in front of you with your arms over if you're riding the subway; my wife had her (see above) purse pick-pocketed 3 times on the subway in Athens (2 different trips to Greece). Situational awareness is important, and take a bag you won't want to put down because it's in the way while you're photographing, though I think the PacSafe reinforced straps may be overkill unless you're entirely on your own. But if you're on organized tours from the ship you'll probably be pretty safe wherever you go.

Jon,

thanks alot for your response. There will be 6 of us going together and we will be doing mostly private tours to the same sites the cruise tours go. Its going to be hot in the summer so i was trying to go as light as possible without sacrificing photo opportunities. Does anyone see i need for the 55-250?

Im going to check out some stores for a small bag to fit my needs, i would love to find the pacsafe in stores for size but they dont seem to be carried anyplace around me (and i am close to big stores, B&H, unique photo, Bergen Camera)

For the Acropolis, a longer lens is good. Also for architectural details on building exteriors. I liked my 70-200 2.8 for details in some of the Greek museums, but the 55-250 may be a bit slow there. Can't say anything about the temperature then, we were over there in October and November. But personally I'd rather have the lens I need for the next shot than to miss the shot. I'd say that if the bag looks a good size for you, take what it'll hold (but don't forget the water bottle).

Thanks again Jon,

I am going to head to the store soon and check out what they have. After posting yesterday i found some good pics and reviews or the Crumpler 5 million dollar home. People really seem to like it and it looks like a size that would travel well. I will see what fits and i can always swap stuff out if i dont want to carry it all on a day i know i wont use it.

I'm heading on a cruise this summer and just purchased a Lowepro passport sling. I'm not entirely happy with the zipper arrangements, the pulls are cord, so I adapted :) I have two metal keyring circles that I'm attaching to use as zipper pulls and my dh gave me a carabiner with a screw mechanism to link the two circles. Definately makes it harder to pickpocket :)
