How do you "shrink" you photos to the 100kb limit?
I'm using a G6 at large/fine.
I don't have Photoshop.

TIA

Well, hmmm... I always either use Photoshop or as cheesy as this sounds (but it works sometimes) Microsoft Paint. Just scale the pic down.

Sorry I'm not more helpful. I'm a dumb newb. :)

Did the G6 come with image editing software? If not you can try an open source (free) editor like IrfanView (external link). It is actually quite a good program.

In iPhoto:

select your photo (click on it so it has a blue border, or shift click to select a series of images, or apple-click to select noncontiguous images)

Share>Export

File Export

Format JPG

Scale photos to 640x480 (or 480x640)

show extensions

name it and save it where you want it

That gives you no control over the amount of jpg compression, but it's easy and usually, depending on the image, gets it under 100KB, or at least close. if you're hosting your images remotely, no one will notice if it's a hair over unless they download it and look, and I would never bother to do that as a judge, unless i noticed a photo taking a ridiculously long time to load into the browser.

I use photoshop for POTN and important stuff, it gives you a lot more control and a preview of the compression, but to post snapshots for friends and stuff, i use that feature in iphoto.

Alternately, you could use the "email" button, set it to 640x480, and email it to yourself, it does the same thing but clogs up your mail.

Thanks, that is exactly what I have been doing and size is still an issue. I'll have to check again when I get home.

If you have windows XP then right click on the file. then click on "send to" then click on "mail recipient" then make sure you tag "make photo smaller". Now you can copy the file it made and attached to the mail. when you have the file just delete the email.

Are they coming out just over? shouldn't be much more than that, I tried a couple images and they all came out under 100KB, but they were all pretty simple, some images with repeating patterns or a lot of detail (tree branches, ripples, plaid) wouldn't compress as well.

Are you hosting them on POTN? (is that even possible? Do they block photos over 100kb?) if it's just a hair over (under 120kb) i wouldn't imagine anyone would notice or care if you're hosting them remotely.

Of course now that you said something, judges are going to start checking it, heh.

If you like doing it that way, and they're coming out too big, you could always just set the dimensions a hair smaller so they squeak in under the limit. Also make sure that you're not setting the SMALLER dimension to 640 and thus really getting a 640x800-something image, someone else had that problem. Make sure it's 640x480 or less.

Bryan

Since you are using iPhoto, I'll assume you are using a MAC, so suggestions to use MS Paint, IrfanView, or "Send to" in XP aren't going to work.. What about using the Internet Conversion in the control panel of Image Browser software that came with the camera?

Bryan,

Don't know what I was doing the other day

It worked perfectly, must have had a brain fart.

My G3 came with a copy of Zoombrowser. It has an email feature so you can send pictures at around 100 mb or less.
