Where were you hearing those quotes?

At the end of the news story.

I didn't hear a quote, I heard hearsay.

Normally I would not reply on post like this but, the yearbook editors making a call of we won't post it for a senior pic BUT if you want to pay $$$$ for ad with it then hey it's a great photo. I feel if it was NOT appropriate for the senior photo then HOW did it become FINE if your willing to pay to post it. Also if they had just posted the photo and not throwed such a stink then the SCHOOL or the GIRL WOULD NOT have gotten the 15 minutes of FAME they have now got.

Every magazine has editorial sections and advertising sections, and no magazine has the same standards for both.

They didn't "throw a stink." They told her "no," and she threw a stink.

Added: My continuing point is that as editors, it's their call. They don't have any obligation to take images they don't like into the editorial sections of the book.

Consensus on the news threads is that both the student and her mother are stupid, crazy, or both.

I say, crazy like a fox. She's getting national name recognition from this, and the big money offer from Playboy to do a magazine spread is right around the corner.

Or maybe they're just morons. Trashy morons.

I'll pick door #2. And dont hold her breath for playboy....maybe hustler at best

The saides thing is the Dad thinks it ok to post his kid out there like that. I just don't understand how Dads let there littel girls run around looking like that. I even see it at church. if you want Guys drooling over your daughter and thinking perverted thoughts I think there is somthing really wrong with the Dad and some one might want to check in on her home life and how dad is treating her.

It is an editorial decision to not include it. Enough said. :-)

I think this all started when Elvis started shaking his hips... .... ...

Cue Robert Preston: "Ya Got Trouble"

One fine night, they leave the pool hall,
Headin' for the dance at the Arm'ry!
Libertine men and Scarlet women!
And Rag-time, shameless music
That'll grab your son and your daughter
With the arms of a jungle animal instinct!
Mass-staria!
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground!

Trouble! Right Here In River City!

This would be a non-issue if she were overweight or not such a good looking young lady. We live in a nation of puritans and we have to keep this in mind when submitting fully clothed images to anything. For one thing if this is her senior portrait she is most likely 18 years of age and as such an adult, able to decide for herself whether or not she wants to be portrayed as a "person of loose moral fiber" and whether this does portray her in this light. Also her parents are not only okay with it but intend to support her here.

She's 18. I can't see how looking at her and thinking certain thoughts is 'perverted' in any way. Do you want daddy to hold her hand until she is 51?

Funny enough, when I watched the news stories, she's a lot prettier than that photo shows. So here on a Photography board, I'll say the photographer needs improvement. I guess he went for 'sexy' over 'beauty'. And I'm disappointed that there are so many that are so critical of an editors decision. And she'll Fight this! And oh, isn't it SAD that she wasn't allowed to put her photo in there?! Rights are now assumed in this country. Get over it.

She submitted. She was rejected. She needs to move on, but I'm sure she'll milk it for all it's worth. (I guess that is her right. ;))

It was a decision by the editors. The job of the editors is to make decisions that keep the content of the publication in line with the vision of the publication.

If the editors were being overridden by other forces, then there would be reason for concern. But this is an editorial decision, and whether we agree with it or not, that's the way publications work everywhere.

Editors "edit." That's their job. They decide what's in and what's out.

Try this: Send a photograph to "Vogue" and say, "My parents gave me permission, so print my picture" and see what those editors say. Maybe the picture will be so awesome they'll print it--but probably not. It's still their decision.

Its the editor's decision to make sure the yearbook is up to their standards. Comments that they are "conservative d-bags" by other forum members is just as obtuse and hateful as the alleged comments on the CNN video.

I highly suggest researching more of the story and the other interviews. This young lady DID IN FACT get this picture in the yearbook, as well as another modeling photo. It was towards the end in the ad section (which in yearbooks is space available to the students and parents to post w/e).

If she really wants to get into modeling she better get used to getting turned down by publications. It happens. It wasn't her yearbook, its the yearbook staff's yearbook. I worked on the yearbook for three years in highschool, and although I tried to represent the students as they would have liked, it was a TON of work and required a bunch of time on my end.

@RDKirk I agree with you.... from what I have seen of the year books (err mostly in the Hollywood movies) they give an idea of most of people being geeky & looking alright (can call it ignorance on my part). I guess sometimes the editor knows whats best keeping in view the standards set at the school. Like I said the concept doesn't exist here & its difficult to understand a bit if introduced
