Interesting article.
"At this point, I'm not aware of any changes — at least any significant or substantive changes — to the policy and guidance we have in place," McGraw said. "If we become aware of a risk that exceeds the boundary of what we think is acceptable, we will make those changes. But not currently."
That's a bold statement! It's right on the money too. For certain things there has to be acceptable risk, otherwise the activity no longer has value. Remove all risk of rock climbing? Don't allow the climber to go higher than 3 feet. If that happened, rock climbing would be pointless.
George Cline, president of Air Boss Inc., said these flight directors are typically former air-traffic controllers with a great deal of aviation experience. Cline said there are briefings for pilots before each show to review flying patterns, weather and directions.
"If you can get someone to hire you, you can be an air boss," Cline said. "There is no training in place right now for an air boss."
NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said "that disturbs me."
Cline said if the FAA worked with the industry to develop certification for air bosses, "that would make air shows safer."
Correct me if I'm wrong...but the air boss has never been a problem. Ever. They also had nothing at all remotely to do with Reno. Why the focus on them?
