I was contacted on behalf of a guitarist I did some live photos of. They want a high res of one of the photos to use for the 8x10s at their NAMM signing. I'm new so I was thinking to allow and just require a photo credit. Is there anything else I should consider or am overlooking? THanks!

And just what good is a photo credit going to do for you?

So he is going to use the photo for promotional work.

Ask him if he will play for free at your next several parties, wedding, etc.

Your work is too good to be giving away.

Get them to show their hand first - ask them what their budget is.

If your not charging then it isn't a start. Do you give photos to your family for free (I assume you do). If so then you already have experience working for free and doing it with this person will not provide you with any experience or benefits you haven't already had. This guy is, or wants to be, paid for his creative work. No reason why you shouldn't too.

Why is it worth paying the printer to make the prints but not the person who created them?

That's actually a legitimate request if the guitarist plays or can play appropriate music and doesn't want to hand over actual cash.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Yes, money. Payment for services rendered. Hard to pay rent and buy food with a photo credit. Nobody where I live takes photo credits for payment of anything.

The next time a publication offers me a photo credit and only a photo credit, I'm going to ask them if I can redeem it for ad space. If they say "no, we can't do that" I'm going to reply "oh so you admit it's worthless then?"

I'll do something similar with bands & albums/show tickets/t-shirts, restaurants and meals, hot girls and dates...

I was asked to do pre-show backstage photography for our local performance of Rocky Horror Picture Show this past October, because I'm friends with several of the cast members. When I asked if they could get show tickets for me and my wife, the show organizer said "Sorry, we're all out of complimentary tickets" to which I replied, "Oh, then I guess I'm all out of complimentary photography services too."

I paid for my tickets out of pocket, sat in the audience, and took photos of my friends on stage. And I made sure not to take any while that event organizer was on the stage.

Anyway, back to the original request, if you're looking to get into this sort of thing for money, software like FotoQuote can give you realistic pricing estimates based on actual industry practices.

See the info & links in: is it okay to get press passes from more than one publication for an event?

Yes! Even if you decide to give them up for free, you don't give up your © along with them. What you give them is the right to use them for a specific purpose for a limited length of time.

Thanks everyone for the replies! As expected there was no budget for the photo. But I did manage 2 passes to the NAMM trade show. A lot of this got me thinking in anticipation for future inquiries. I appreciate your advices.
