I'm about to get a CPL filter and want to get something decent, so I'll spend a bit of money. Right now I have two lenses with 58mm filter rings (18-55mm and 70-100mm), but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a wide angle lens in the future that will take a 77mm filter (Canon 10-22, Sigma 10-22 or Tamron 10-24, or Tokina 11-16).

So, what filter model would you recommend, and should I just get a 58mm for now, or get a 77mm and step up ring? How big a pain in the neck is it to use the step up ring?

Thanks for the suggestions,
cmh

You could get the 77mm filter and a 58-77 step-up ring...but the step-up and large filter will effectively prevent you from using a hood with either 58mm thread lens.

Using a step-up ring is not really a pain, you just cant use a lens hood while using the step-up ring. If it were me Id go with the B+W MRC F-Pro CPL 77mm and use the step up ring. Unless you have the money for two. I ended up buying a second so I could use the lens hood on both my 58mm and 77mm lenses. Since those are the only two filter sizes I need its worked out find so far. Also, check out maxsaver.net for the best price on the B+W CPL.

It's a minor pain to use a step up ring. It's actually easy to use but it's always hanging out there. I would go ahead and get the 58mm now. There are a number of decent brands, Hoya, B&W, Tiffen and others.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Get the 58 mm filter. You may change your mind and get a different next lens that doesn't take 77 mm filters. It happens. And polarizers on UWA lenses tend to give an uneven effect just because of the wide angle of coverage the lens has. Worry about the filters for the UWA when you get the UWA.

Had very good quality B&W CPL I put on the 10-22. Won't do that again. Way too much vignetting. I was lucky enough to get a FF body. Now I use a 17-40 lens with the same filter. Compared to using that filter on a 10-22 on a crop body....no vignetting at all.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I just ordered a 58mm Mayumi CPL filter that did very well on lensfilter.com comparison tests and isn't too pricey.

When I get a wider lens with a 77mm ring, I'll look at the options and maybe spring for a B&W slim to limit the vignetting.
