Hi folks,

With the release of LR4 beta, I figured I'd give it a shot. I am not a big fan of Lightroom, and I seldom use it, but I know that v4 adds some interesting tools and features. So, with that in mind, I decided to try an atypical workflow for most people here.

I shot this scene in my friend's bicycle shop warehouse. he is also a master frame builder and his workshop is also in this warehouse. This part of the warehouse is like a cave, and the angle I chose to shoot was a nightmare as well, with bright afternoon sun backlighting the hanging bicycles.

I shot 11 exposures, i think, and used three for Zero Noise to work its magic. The result was a 16 bit TIFF with over 16 stops of dynamic range.

I then took the TIFF into LR4 and used the new shadows, highlights, blacks and whites sliders, along with the usual controls to produce an image I could start working with in Photoshop. I brought back contrast (global and local) in photoshop, as well as some color. I ended up blending the edit back into the original image that came out of Lightroom to reestablish the cave-like feel. This image is a lot lighter than the actual warehouse.

I will have to experiment more with LR4, but even a skeptic of LR like me is feeling initially impressed by the additions - especially one I did not use in this exercise... soft proofing!

I love shots like this. If someone weren't paying attention, they may never notice that ...

- That light coming in the door and the window must have been a problem.
- It doesn't look like there's any artificial interior light
- Wait a minute. Yoiu can see details outside that door & window across the ally
- etc

This shot doesn't look processed, it doesn't look more like a painting than a photo.

I think it may look a bit more like low ISO print film than digital, but I mean that as a compliment.

Very nice work.

Now THIS is what we're talking about! Great work!

BTW....how do you get ZN to work....mine says it's "expired" and needs to be re-downloaded, but when I try and reinstall, I get the same message, due to the old version and halted development of the program.

Thanks folks.

Here is the image that came out of LR4beta, prior to photoshop.

and here are 100% crops of parts of that LR image:

OldBaldy: I do not know why you get that error. Have you installed the base (0.9) version and then copied the latest update over the initial install, per the instructions?

Maybe try to email GUI (Guillermo) or PM him from the forum and see if he can help get you up and running.

I spoke too soon - my versions of Zero Noise and Histogrammar have expired - I downloaded the most recent, 2011 files on Guillermo's website to no avail.

I will shoot him an email and see what's up.

I was pretty sad to see that the whole ZN effort has been shelved....so don't hold much hope of a response, but let me know (although, to be honest, I'm very happy with SNS-HDR for my merging/aligning/deghosting and tone-mapping tool.)

I truly suck at PS/LR PP work, so am going to get myself onto a local course to get a clue! :)

The end of 2011 made the copies expire - you can roll the date back on your system if you need to use it. Or, you can use the Linux version, which has no watermark restriction and is still under development, although nothing super recent.

I run both on my Mac. Guillermo has been very busy with work and has not had the chance to update ZN in a while.
