Hi folks,
With the release of LR4 beta, I figured I'd give it a shot. I am not a big fan of Lightroom, and I seldom use it, but I know that v4 adds some interesting tools and features. So, with that in mind, I decided to try an atypical workflow for most people here.
I shot this scene in my friend's bicycle shop warehouse. he is also a master frame builder and his workshop is also in this warehouse. This part of the warehouse is like a cave, and the angle I chose to shoot was a nightmare as well, with bright afternoon sun backlighting the hanging bicycles.
I shot 11 exposures, i think, and used three for Zero Noise to work its magic. The result was a 16 bit TIFF with over 16 stops of dynamic range.
I then took the TIFF into LR4 and used the new shadows, highlights, blacks and whites sliders, along with the usual controls to produce an image I could start working with in Photoshop. I brought back contrast (global and local) in photoshop, as well as some color. I ended up blending the edit back into the original image that came out of Lightroom to reestablish the cave-like feel. This image is a lot lighter than the actual warehouse.
I will have to experiment more with LR4, but even a skeptic of LR like me is feeling initially impressed by the additions - especially one I did not use in this exercise... soft proofing!
