I'm going to Israel for 10 days shortly, and I am wondering what lenses I should bring. I was thinking of taking my 17-55 2.8 IS, and a sigma 30mm 1.4, but I also don't know if a longer lens would come in handy. I have a 70-200 2.8 IS, but I think that may be a bit too large to take.

I am also considering renting an UWA lens (possibly the tokina 11-16 2.8). I have a 7D so it should handle the dust/sand well with regards to weather proofing. Any suggestions?

Where are you going? I've been many times, used to work in Haifa. If I were going with my 7D I'd bring 10-22, 15-85 and maybe the 70-200. I wouldn't worry about dust/sand, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm going with a group called Birthright Israel, we are traveling all around the country. I think I am going to rent some sort of UWA lens.

I just got back from Egypt and Jordan, and while neither of these places are Israel I could at least see Israel from some spots, which clearly makes me an expert :p

I had the 17-50 and 10-20 which served me really well, definitely would have missed the UWA if I hadn't taken it . There was a few times where a telephoto would have been ideal though so if you can manage the 70-200 I'd definitely take it.

That is the reason I opted for the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. I carry it everywhere! It and the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens are my go-to lens duo for virtually all my photography, especially travel.

I don't travel anywhere without a long lens.

You can't beat a long focal length lens for cropping in the camera...

For isolating subjects with selective depth of field..

And for compressing distances...

It is also great for catching subjects unawares for candid portraits...
