Thanks, I have never seen one of either in the flesh. I don't think we have any this side of the pond. IIRC they were mainly used by the Army Air Force in New Guinea weren't they? A very odd design, with the engine behind the pilot, and I think probably the single seat first fighter with a tricycle undercart. They are lovely images.

Some truly amazing images on this thread, especially the full disc shots...

Can I ask if you guys that are using long lenses are hand holding, on sticks or monopods.? How do you get such sharp images at a 60th at 600mm +

Cheers

In my case, lots of practice + plenty of luck, too! ; )

Practice and conditioning.

I try to spend a couple hours a month photographing fast-moving vehicles or birds in flight, crossing my path at different angles to where I setup. I start around 1/60 and go down to 2 seconds or longer, straining to keep a selected object in focus. Also learning parallax at different speeds and rotational position. Once you get pretty good at that, shooting aircraft at 1/50 is easier than you think. Going down to 1/15 is doable, but still challenging.

I do 50/50 tripod-mounted and hand-held. The photo above was handheld. My 600mm is too heavy to operate handheld for very long, so it sits on a tripod most of the time, with a lighter rig leaning against my leg or on the ground ready to swap.

"You" = who?
"manage" = what? -?

I try the slower shutter speeds but the parallax usually kills me...what's your secret to getting better at that?

Can you fix parallax. Trying to maintain shots square on is about the only way to stop it I thought.

Good ol' MkI

With the 1DX MkII, it's a tack-sharp speed demon. I CPS-demoed the MkII but didn't see a measurable IQ difference. It could have been their demo was well-used.

The slower you go, the more parallax you'll get. Understanding what you'll get provides you with more creative control...like the ability to isolate the focus on a particular area as you slow down the shutter speed. below, I dialed from 1/25 to 1/15 on the same pass (handheld pan).
