"New" S90 and a RAW Question

I just bought a used S90 on eBay that's in extremely excellent condition, but it did not come with the software CD. I very much want to shoot in RAW format, but need a program to transfer such files form my SD card to my computer. Is there a site where I can download what's on the CD?

Also, I tried to transfer a JPG image from the card in the camera using the method in the instruction book. I'd turn the camera on by pressing the small triangle symbol, then open up a copy of Camera Window I downloaded. But the program would only open very briefly, then quit. Ideally, I want to open such images in iPhoto or Photoshop Elements 10.

I'd be grateful for any guidance.

Thanks very much.

For transferring the images to your computer
I highly recommend using a card reader instead.

For editing RAW files, download from Canon:

Should transfer with windows without needing the CD.

If you want to use canons DPP you will need a CD , there are places you can download it I think, else use adobes DNG raw convertor or something

Thanks very much. The Canon software link only has updates for DPP and Image Browser, so I guess I would need the CD. Hmm.

I have a card reader, but it hasn't worked with my SD card. The USB cable could be at fault.

If you have an older SD card reader and your SD card is over 2 GB in capacity, it's possible that your reader can't handle the SDHC (4GB-32 GB) specification. The original SD specification only ran up to 2 GB capacity cards. And now there's the SDXC spec. if you need cards of over 32 GB. The drawbacks of the SD card spec - a lot of the smarts are built into the reader/writer, not the card, so if you need a greater capacity, everything needs to be redesigned. Not a problem with CF cards.

if youre using iphoto, then you dont need a raw convertor. iphoto has built in import function for the camera. iphoto also allows raw editing. But the raw capabilities and the editing on iPhoto is pretty basic.

A new card reader it is. Thanks so much. I found this, which tells where to find and how to install the Canon software without a CD. You need to modify the updater files for each of the programs so they install the updated pgm. without checking for a previous version. Whoa.:

If you know anyone with a Canon digital camera just borrow their CD. All you have to do is install any one program from the disk (or all which might take longer but be easier). Give the disk back and then go to the Canon web site and download the latest software. Once this is done the first time you're "in" so to speak as the Canon site only does updates, not new installs. Go back to their site maybe annually and update your software and you're fine. If you can't find someone with a disk you can try calling Canon (1-800-OK-Canon) give them the serial number of your camera and they "might" sell you a disk. I know they sell disks if you're the original owner and have registered the camera but since you're not the original owner they might resist. Good luck.
