Focusing on dark venue

I notice that everytime i shoot 'social' photography, i always get mis-focused.

I use canon 5Dmk1 and canon 16-35mm with speedlite 430EXII, usually set up iso to 200, standard power on speedlite.

I use 'center weighted' metering mode and AI servo focus.

Stand not too far from the subject.

Any tips?

The assist beam on the flash doesn't work in AI servo mode, so your camera/lens is probably struggling obtaining accurate focus.

So, what should i do? change the focus to AI focus or one shot?
