I currently use 2 Manfrotto light stands (5001Bs). I am looking to get my flash up higher to be able to place light above my subject's head. I am currently using umbrellas and a 24x24 EZybox. I will probably be adding a beauty dish in the future. I'm using a combination of Canon and Yonguno strobes.

Any suggestions on a stand. I think I need it to be at least 8'.

Thank You

You need to watch the weight as you'll be putting up a BD. I just bought a manfrotto that can supposedly take 35kg counter weight. I'm not convinced it could handle that much (hey, i'm sure it can, but i'm a bit worried to try) but i've had a large stripbox held on it looking down with quite a few kilos on the other end.

Can't remember the model off the top of my head, but it wasn't the top of the range one with the adjustment handles. It was the one down for around $400 i think.

It's pretty tricky to position when loaded up with weight, but you soon learnt the best way to handle it.

If you're near a Calumet, though I haven't had a lot of time to play with it, I can suggest THIS (external link). Also a 25 lb sandbag, as c-stands don't have a super wide footprint. I plan on using 10lb ankle weights for the counter-weight. Something like that should work well for speedlights, if you don't need a ton of boom. btw, I'm coming from the cheap interfit plastic stuff for light stands, so pretty much anything would have been an improvement to me!

Here's the blurb on the one i bought, the manfrotto 420CSU

"Load capacity at maximum extension at 6 inclination" = 1.5kg"
max. load capacity is 12kg if the boom is set under 6 degree inclination.
Anything over a 6 degree inclination & the boom will only hold 1.5kg
requires 35kg of counterweight to balance a 5kg load at full extension (191cm)
The maximum extension length of 191cm is from the centre to the edge.

I bought an eBay boom and can attest to how much weight is required for counter balance. I need approx 30 lbs to counter a 22" beauty dish and and einstein at about a 60deg angle and full extension.

I just bought an avenger combi boom stand and it is great. It's heavy, so it works well outdoors as long as you don't mind carrying it. I used an a b1600 and bd on it outsid in the wind with no weights on it an it didn't budge. Don't know about as a boom as I haven't used it for that yet. I hanse a manfrotto version that is similar and it is the same but lighter for the most part. Simply not as heavy and sturdy. The Avenger also has an adjustable leveling leg that is useful.
