I am looking for a new bag to fit all of my (future) gear.

What do I want to carry:
- Canon 7D+grip
- Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6
- Sigma 70-200 f2.8
- Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO Tele Macro HSM (25.6 x 9.1 cm)
- Canon 50mm f1.8
- Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM
- Canon 430 EXII flash
- Some filters and CF cards
- Asus N53SV 15.6" laptop (39.1 x 26.6 x 3.1 cm)
- Feisol CT-3442 tripod met Sirui K30x ballhead

What I have found myself:
- Lowepro Vertex 200 AW
- Kata Bug-203 PL

I would like a backpack with the opening on the back, like the Lowepro Flipside series, but I can't seem to find one that is big enough and fits my laptop?
Do you have any suggestions? I want one to use on the plane, so that I don't have to put any of my gear in suitcase.

As soon as I say this, someone will come along and prove me wrong. But no matter - at least this will have served a practical purpose then.

Anyway - I'm pretty sure you're not going to find a single bag that will both carry all of that and still be small enough to carry on. Most airlines claim to restrict bags to around 45" (L + H + W). I don't think it's possible to fit your list of stuff into that space. Not to mention the fact that they have weight restrictions on the bags. Sometimes that's as low as 15lbs.

I think the biggest killer for you is the tripod along with the two long lenses. They may not seem long on your desk, but in a bag 10"-13" is pretty good size. That means the lens lays on its side and takes up the space that 2 or 3 lenses that could go in vertically would take.

Is this for vacation or work? Would you bringing all of that because you think you'll have an assignment that you'd need that list of lenses along for, or are you simply planning bringing all of your gear wherever you go?

If it's the latter, maybe you need to re-evaluate what you want to bring, and why you'd need it with.

Maybe ...

You could check your tripod inside your suitcase and leave one of the longer lenses at home. And would you really need to have a battery grip along?

There ya go. Didn't I say that would happen?

If you can get away with ignoring weight and either check your tripod in a suitcase or lash it to the outside of this you might actually fit everything else in.

The tripod can be lashed to the outside, that is my intention too ;) And for transportation on the plane, I will put it in the suitcase. I don't think you're allowed to bring a tripod on board, it can be used as a weapon.

I want to be able to carry all that gear when I go on vacation. If you can't carry it all, why buy it? I want a big bag to carry all my gear to the hotel room and then I can fit the gear I need for the day in a smaller bag (Flipside 200).

I got a Dakine Sequence (http://www.dakine.com/w/packs/photo-packs (external link)) in November and have traveled with it on a few plane trips since w/o any issue.

There really isn't a great way to attach a tripod to it though - I put my tripod in my checked bag during 2 of trips I have made with it.

I absolutely hand carried my tripod from FL to NJ and back (I wont say it was fun though) on board a total of 4 planes and had no issues doing so. Unfortunately, the tripod I am using now will not fit in my 2-3 day luggage and I didn't want to take my larger suitcase just to fit the tripod for a 2-day trip - so I was forced to hand carry it. I have also seen other people do it as well.

I've never had to weigh a carry on.

Ever...

I've asked more than one TSA agent, and tripods are quite permissible.

As for it being used as a weapon, so can a credit card or a ball point pen...

Ok it is nice that apparently you can carry it on some planes, but I have heard a story of a friend of mine who couldn't take it onboard because he could use it as a weapon. He had to put it with his other luggage, but since that was already gone, he couldn't put it in his suitcase. He could put it in a plastic bag... I don't want my carbon tripod to be transported that way, it will probably get beat and banged up a bit and that would be waste.

But that's a little offtopic, anyone other suggestions? I like the Dakine, but I don't think my laptop will fit in there. On the picture it is a MBP 15" I think and it fits, but there is not much space left, and my laptop is a bit bigger. The Think Tank is just downright ugly :D

+1 Exactly what I use, had the tripod strapped to the backpack a couple times and hand-carried the tripod other times and never had an issue boarding.

Same here, often my camera bag weighs more then the checked baggage if I have one.

I have a 15" Dell Latitude, the semi-rugged ATG model, and it fits w/o a problem.

EDIT: Just measured - mine is right at 14" on its longest dimension and it has maybe 3/4" - 1" in space remaining, so fitting yours would certainly be close.

I am also thinking about the Lowepro Prorunner 450 AW. Does any of you have experience with that bag?
