Just trying to get better at shooting HS boys basketball with OnCamera flash. I typically shoot w/o flash so I can use at least 1/640-1/800 SS and have better results in freezing action. I've tried my AB800's (directed upward toward ceiling at 60 degrees) in this same gym, but can only mount them on one side of the gym, even tried bouncing off side walls. I realize sync speed for my Quantum Trio (and AB800s) will only allow me to get 1/250 on my 40D...but....

Last night I tried it in a poorly lit gym that always screws with my white balance...this shot for example the EXIF is 1/250 ss, ISO 1000, AI Servo (center focus point), F2.8 with my 70-200 IS 2.8L. This shot as all the ones I did last night I took off the diffusser and tried feathering the light upward a little because I didn't want it directly pointing at the players. Ceiling way to high to bounce.

I'm just looking for experienced constructive input about how to better my techniques and freeze action best with hotshoe mounted flash. Thanks for looking and your help.

look at gatorboy's tutorial in sports forum. Why on camera why can't you put a light stand some where? Also you need to make flash exposure 3 stops or so more than ambient. With AB800 it should be easily doable. Shoot at say ISO 400, f4, 1/320 or so.

Even a hot shoe mounted flash can be pointed straight up at the ceiling. Curtis N has a post here in the lighting forum https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=451770 and there are many "strobed basketball" threads in sports and sports talk. There is a bit to learn about this but it is all available on POTN. The key with the 1/250 shutter is to make the flash stop the action with its speedy burst of 1/1000 sec or faster. to do this, the dark gyms are better because it is easier for your flash to overcome the poor ambient lights. If you can not overcome the ambient your pictures will suffer from ghosting and blurry extremities.
