Taxes (look very much made in India) waiting the customers in Rangoon, the capital of Burma, year 1987. Some of the drivers are wearing longys (external link).

More transportation pictures from Burma close to 25 years ago >here< (external link), all scanned from slides.

Interesting shots. What does that sign at the top-right say?

Could it be "Ne Win Taxi Service - We Take You Anywhere". :D My Burmese is a bit rusty ... ;) but I try to find out, Frank.

I wonder what would be in the photo if you stood in the same spot today?

Unfortunately Google Street View is not available from Yangon, yet. ;)

One recent visitor has compared some of my Burma pictures to the today's situation and commented that "seems like not so much has changed!", see the responses of this blog (external link). - I would love to get back and take these shots again!

Looks likes a trip in 2017 to mark 30 years might be on the cards then ;)

Mine too but I will give it a try.

Top right sign says "Taung-Gyi-Mun" guest-house. Looks like a small town guest-house by the look of it. By any chance this photo was taken at town of "Taung Gyi"(Shan State/Shan hills) near In-Le lake famous for floating villages?

Taxi color scheme also does not jive with Rangoon taxi cabs. One of your other photos has Rangoon Taxi scene, they are mostly solid light blue color, or not in the picture but lots of yellow three wheels tuk-tuks(they might have been removed from Rangoon by 1987).

Thanks a lot bzoom!

Surely my mistake. Yes, I visited also Taunggyi (external link), but I didn't mark all the slides with the location information, and could not remember the details anymore. Now I can fix this. :D

(Some pictures from Inle Lake >here< (external link).)

No problem Olli, I am glad to assist. Old photos are hard to keep track once time passes but they sure are precious.

Look like you had great time in Burma back in 1987. Lots of things have changed today, will you be going for another visit perhaps? Things sure are expensive there today though. Hopefully, improvements are coming.

(Additional note on the photo: Neighborhood looks like a Gurkha (Nepalese) ethnic neighborhood, the sign of the left building says "Ngwe-Taung"(Silver mountain) butter shop& dairy products. There are a lot of Gurkha ethnic folks up in the Shan state who remained behind there after serving in the British military during the colonial days.

Of the three taxis parked, I don't know much about left and right but the middle one is a Mazda B360 light pick-up truck very common in Burma, used as taxi cabs, also yellow taxi Mazda K360 they replaced can still be found at the small towns on the country side today.)
