I'm looking for a "3-way" pan & tilt head to replace the stock Slik 700DX head on my tripod. I do a lot of product photography and landscape shooting and would like something a bit lighter than the Slik head if possible (2.6lbs). I need something with a quick release plate (the round Slik plate is excellent, the RC2 plate that came with my Manfrotto ballhead was junk). Any suggestions?
What I'm looking for:
-Sturdy head that can support 8-10lbs (Canon 40D with 70-200mm and 430EXII at most)
-Secure quick release plate that doesn't "wobble" when locked down
-Precise adjustments, secure in portrait orientation
-Not incredibly heavy (I enjoy hiking/backpacking to location)
I'm not entirely opposed to a ballhead with a separate panning lock. The Manfrotto 496 I had was completely trashed by rain and sand...it's now unusable. I don't know if they're all this fragile, but I'd like to avoid wasting another $80 on such a product.
So far I've been looking at the Giottos 5001 and 5011, and the Induro heads.
