Hi Everyone -

Has anyone else on this forum sent their 5D classic in to Canon to simply have cosmetic parts replaced/restored to their original condition? For example, the rubber grip and battery door on my 5Dc are pretty worn down from use over the years. Also, I'd assume Canon can easily replace the back and top LCD covers to clean up any scratches. A new flash mount would be great too, since the black paint is starting to rub off mine.

I'm curious for those of you who've done this before, how much would this cost via the Canon Irvine service center?

I don't live too far from there, so I was thinking about dropping my camera off sometime for a full restoration, if possible.

Thanks!
-Brandon

I guess it really comes down to what it's worth to you to have a pristine looking 5D. I'm guessing if it's that worn around the edges it's got a high shutter count.

To me it wouldn't be worth it .. I'd let it wear it's battle scars with honor.

Im not really too sure what it would cost but think its a great idea actually. The 5D-c still has better IQ than most cameras out there being sold today. So if it isnt too much, i would do the same.

I'd rather spend money on glass or flash. Who cares what a body looks like as long as it still functions properly?

I'd get some good use out of it first. The only benefit you will get from cosmetic improvements is in the resale value. So, every time you pick up the camera, you will put some wear into it and every time you mount a flash that paint will chip a bit, so why bother doing that now, when it will be more economical to wait until you are ready to sell it? I've been shooting with my 5DC for over four years, and don't feel compelled to go for cosmetic repairs...

I've never considered sending mine in, it's in excellent condition. Seems like a good idea, they'd look it over and replace what needs replacing.

Sure, if the price is worth it!

My luck I would spend a small fortune making the camera look pretty, only to drop it and then have major costs to just fix the camera so it could work again.....

Only give Canon your money when you have to.

We used to call the brassing of normally black bodies "pro marks." i almost bought a lens with an extending hood that was trashed, and called Canon about the work and parts. Canon will do it all, and reasonably priced I found.

I agree with the post that the 5D is a great camera still (I'm on my 3rd; never any problem, just bought and sold a lot). I bought my last one (used) in mid 2010, but I doubt I'd buy another today. If you want a cleaner body for mind reasons (i'm a perfectionist also), then do it. you can do the LCD covers yourself very easily.

Just wait until it needs repair, if they have to go inside the camera they can replace those parts for a reasonable fee.

Or as it happened to me they replaced the back for free, don't know why because when it left me it was unblemished. Maybe they broke it when they took it off. They never gave an explanation.

If you go ahead with this, let us know what it ends up costing.

You can buy the shoe, the lcd covers and many other parts from USCAMERA (external link)
You don't have to be a qualified technician to do this simple things, and it will not cost you more than maybe $100.
