40D problem?

Hello,

I got my 40D used and cheap (about 250$) but there were reasons for that. One of them being 100k shutter actuations. Since it can be easily replaced if broken i'm good with that.

I did not notice any problems with the body at first but later i found some bands in pictures. Usually they are in the same position. Not really a problem in well exposed and bright pictures but sometimes you can see a hint of it in darker places. Underexposed images are a different story. I've attached a worse case scenario. The picture was underexposed and brightened by 1 stop in pp so the bands are clearly visible.

Anyone know if this might an indication of a dieing sensor? Or what could have caused it?

Maybe i should start thinking of another body? That would be a shame because i really loved how it outperformed my old 350D in every single way

Yes

I'm thinking banding from underexposure.

My 20D does the same thing with high iso underexposed shots.

This was ISO 200.
Also the lines always appear at the same place. My 350D never does that when underexposed. Even in correctly exposed pictures you can get a hint of that line on someones black dress or similar.

I don't think the banding is caused my underexposure. If that's the case, there would be more banding on various part of the image.
If the position of the band is always consistent, then it might be coming from the shutter. Check some underexposed images shot in portrait orientation. See how the banding appears.

It appears vertically at around the same place

It's likely coming from the shutter. Give Canon support a call, see if they can confirm based on your images.

Hm, care to explain what shutter has to do with this? I thought this is indicating some kind of a problem with the sensor.

The call would probably be a good idea too

Perhaps you should try to shoot with the lens cap on in the dark, with a 5-10 sec exposure and no Noise Reduction for long exposure (if your camera has this type of NR).

If you see bands, it's most likely the sensor...

Looks like a sensor issue to me too. My 40D has never given me this kind of problem.
