I got this pretty neat modifier just before the holidays, and hadn't seen a lot of examples of it's use yet.

Do you have one? Share some examples of the shots you've taken with it!

Here's a quick self portrait, and a second self portrait with my son.

Both were lit with a single 580exII in the Apollo Orb just off to camera right, then a second 580exII, totally bare and pointing at the back of my head.

ETTL mode, triggered from the top of a 7D's master flash - 8:1 ratio (A being in the Orb, B being the bare flash) - +1 overall FEC

I've seen this, I'm interested how it compares to the Creative Light offering.. Does it have interior diffusion material?

No, it's only got a single diffusion panel - I should have added that I didn't have that panel on in these shots.

From my test shots though - the coverage is even on the front panel, even from a single speedlite (I've tested it with three and a tri-flash adaptor too).

I do wish it had a grid available for it, but I can live without it for the price!

I've been eyeing the Apollo Orb for a few weeks now, but haven't seen much about it. I currently have a Cheetah Qbox, but feel it's a bit small. Supposedly you can put speedlites and studio strobes in the Orb, which I don't think can be done with a qbox.

after having it for a few months now, are you still thrilled about it?

It's on back order (external link), but it looks like they're starting to make grids for this series. I said it before, but when they make one for the 50" softbox, I'll buy.

i use a tribracket and stick 3 speedlights when i used mine

i've had it for a couple of months as well but i'm using my bd a lot more than this thing - a little hassle to use if you can't control your light remotely

yes, one of the pet peeves I hear about Apollo products and having to tear into the modifier to change settings.

I still use manual pocket wizards (I have the Plus IIIs on preorder), so I haven't moved into ETTL triggers yet.

The only reason I can tolerate my Apollo 28" box is because I use it with my PW flex to control power remotely. Otherwise I dislike accessing the speedllite to adjust power settings.

The orb does look like a neat modifier. 46" Photek softliter seems a tad less cumbersome to access power settings quickly. Many ways to skin a cat.

Here (external link) is a page on my blog site describing how I setup the Orb to make it more flexible when shooting. The images posted by the OP have the Orb too low for my taste which is what led me to come up with this approach.

Using FlexTT5s, or even a long TTL cord with the second and subsequent flash units on slave does make it more useful.

I was checking that out earlier today dmward.

I still haven't decided which route I will take, whether it's the orb or another modifier. I like the concept that I can use this with my speedlites, as well as (according to their website) studio strobes without any additional brackets.

have you used this with a studio strobe?

No, I have so many modifiers for my Einsteins that last thing I need is another option.

I have become addicted to foldable softboxes I have two from Buff and a bunch from Fotodiox. Their Pro Studio Solutions EZ box is a great bargain. And the deflection disk seems to work well to smooth out the light across the front. I did a test comparing their 30" octa to an Elinchrom deep octa the same size and its impossible to see any difference.

Kacey Enterprises has an adapter ring that fits them perfectly and gets the strobe tube in the Einstein (or any other AB light) about 1 1/2 inches further into the modifier.

Long answer. :-)

I really love the quality and spread of the light from the orb. I use pixel kings with yongnuo 565s so I don't have to keep opening it up and closing it.

Unfortunately the end of the rod has come out, and the middle pole is splitting near the end and I have to use a lot of force to push it through to get it to open up again. I've only used this 3 times and I have to send it in to get this fixed. ):

Funny you mention fotodiox. I've been considering their octagon in addition to the orb.

Find the EZ pro version. It has an umbrella like mechanism and a deflector plate.
Just a bit more expensive and much easier to use. Here (external link)

perfect. I liked the ease of setup with the Orb, but not so much the movement restrictions. The fotodiox looked promising, but reports of assembly and not being able to just collapse it made me second thing.
