RF-602's triggering flash, and shutter, but no light...

I've done this in the past where I would use my RF602's as both a remote shutter release and also a trigger for my flashes at the same time, and the pictures turned out fine.

However, today I try to do the same thing, and the shutter will trip, and the flashes will flash, but the pictures are just black (which is what I would expect if there were no flash at all).

I'm not in live view mode, and the only thing that's changed between the last time I used them in this way is the cable that attaches to the receiver and plugs into the camera had to be replaced (poor packing job on my part, snapped off at the receiver). It appears to be the exact same cable, same part number and all.

I'm a little stumped as to why everything would trigger but just not sync up (I tried this down to shutter speeds of 1/60th, and same thing). Anyone have any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

If you are not using two sets of triggers on separate channels for the two tasks, that is your problem. If you have the shutter release unit and the flash unit on the same channel they will fire at the same time and the flash will fire too soon.

Just a silly question. Is the lens cap on? .. I have done that a lot...

Ha! That would be a great beginning to a LightRules thread, but no, cap is off.

So dedsen, you're saying I need two separate triggers? I have them, but how would I sync them together so that the flash timing matches the shutter timing?

You need two triggers and two receivers, each pair on a different channel. One pair to serve as a shutter release, one pair to serve as a flash trigger.

You need one transmitter in your hand to trip the shutter. It's matching receiver, same channel, is connected to the camera remote shutter port. The you need another transmitter on a different channel in the hotshoe of the camera. It's matching receiver is connected to the flash. You trip the shutter and then at the correct time the camera will trip the transmitter in the hotshoe and fire the flash.

Like the transmitter in your hand must be on Ch 1 (or whatever channel) and a receiver connected to your camera must also be on Ch1. Then there should be a transmitter on your hot shoe on Ch 2 and a receiver on a flash also on Ch 2. So when you trigger your camera, the camera triggers the flash.

Yes, you need two separate triggers for this. One to trip the camera, and one for the camera to trip the flash. The two things do not happen at the same time.

Aaaahh. That makes sense. Thank you so much. Gonna try that in the morning. I have the equipment, so if it's just a matter of changing channels, I'm all set. Thanks so much guys.

Yep, I do that all the time.. I've moved from RG-602 to CyberSync's, but I still use my 602's as a wireless shutter remote. Back in the day I had to specifically purchase another set of RF-602's so I could fire the flashes while at the same time use the wireless shutter release. Two sets, two different channels, and you're good to go.
