Ok, so definently cant be the first time this has popped up, but looking to pick up one or the other in April....

I use windows mainly to edit my videos and ofcourse photos.... as well as downloading a heavy dose of torrents and making dvd's of them.

Im just looking to go all out and stock up the processor and memory on my next laptop to ensure it lasts more than a good year or two (hopefully)

my current XPS system started to really show lag and delays on startup at about the two year mark...

any advice on the alienware and macbook pro??? never used mac's... lol but people rave about how fast they boot up and stay that way!

i have a newer XPS with i7, etc and it is smokin with CS5 and LR3....

Why not just get another XPS? if yours lags it may be due to improper maintenance and any computer will slow down if you don't stay on top of it....

besides, aren't alienwares just dells with cooler cases? ;-)a

How old is your XPS? If its only 2 years old then reforomatting and starting from scratch will give you a speed boost. After years of use by people not tech savy all manner of junk piles up is the registry, startup and bloat ware can really slow things down. You could also upgrade RAM if you have less than 8GB and get a faster hard drive for quick boosts. As far as getting an XPS vs MBP it comes down to Windows vs OS X not nessessarily the machines themselves. If you want this for photography and don't want to go Apple I would consider the Lenovo Workstation series of laptops. Alienware are usually very modular so they'll be thicker and heavier than MBPs.

Or simply upgrade the HD to an SSD.

My Win7 i7 with an SSD boots up in around 20 seconds.

Why is boot time an issue anyway? Boot once, use it all day. Or if it's slow, boot once, standby at night to save power, resume instantly the next day. Or hibernate for a semi quick resume with no power used overnight. Application speed is more important.

So was his post. ;)

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I agree. App speed > boot speed. I get having a quick boot speed, but if I can load photoshop from the ssd and read/write during my workflow twice as fast, the ssd will take the cake!
