OK, so I bit the bullet and pulled out the ol' AmEx and picked up the Celestron CGEM 800 HD. (external link) Which gives me a nice tracking mount and gives the wifey a telescope she can use for stargazing.

Beyond this, I have (or have ordered):

  • T-adaptor
  • T-mount adaptor for my 7D
  • Nebulosity 2 (I am a Mac household)
  • StarMap (star finder app for iPhone/iPad)

A couple of questions:
  • What are the bits I need to mount my 7D on the mount - I think a dovetail bar and something like a Manfotto head?
  • When do I need to worry about autoguiding--I figure it will take me a while to figure this rig out. I am starting with wide field pics--its auto guiding only make sense with DSOs or is it helpful even with wide field pics?

Thanks in advance,

Omar

The T-adapter is what you use for mounting your camera on the telescope. If you want to put the camera directly on the mount you will need a dovetail bar and something to put your camera on the dovetail, for which there are many possibilities.

Gripped 7D, gripped, full-spectrum modfied T1i (500D), SX50HS, A2E film body, Tamzooka (150-600), Tamron 90mm/2.8 VC (ver 2), Tamron 18-270 VC, Canon FD 100 f/4.0 macro, Canon 24-105 f/4L,Canon EF 200 f/2.8LII, Canon 85 f/1.8, Tamron Adaptall 2 90mmf/2.5 Macro, Tokina 11-16, Canon EX-430 flash, Vivitar DF-383 flash, Astro-Tech AT6RC and Celestron NexStar 102 GT telescopes, various other semi-crappy manual lenses and stuff.
