Tuesday night Varsity HS Basketball

Here's a few shots from tonights Varsity game. Sigma 70-200, f/2.8, 1/640, ISO 3200.

Thank you! I'm finding that I'm not as "snap happy" as I was when I first started to shoot basketball this season. I used to come home with close to 500 shots (JV and Varsity) and would throw most of those away, but now I'm coming home with 200 or less and keeping a lot more. I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting now. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Shots look good coming from the sigma 70-200... how much post work are you doing on these if any.?? my sigma 70-200 is a little soft, so I use it for outdoor events only... f2.8 is not getting it... I think I need to slow down on my 'snap happy' shooting too...lol

Thanks, Joe300. Another poster on this forum suggested to try f/3.5 - he seemed to get sharper pictures from his lens. I tried it, but really didn't see much difference other than having to slow down my shutter speed to expose correctly - or at least close.

Nice images, what iso were you shooting at?

Great results, mrwilt. White balance and color saturation look perfect on my monitor. That's one of the tougher aspects to get right when shooting with ambient light in a HS gym. Like the action, too.

Thanks, Travelingman! I shot these at ISO 3200. I do my noise reduction in LightRoom.

I appreciate that, snyderman. Believe it or not, I shoot my white sock to set my custom white balance. I guess it's a good thing my wife uses Clorox!

mrwilt- In LR, how far did you make your NR adjustment? Was it needed for each image at ISO 3200?

Hey Coldwater. I pushed the NR Luminance slider to 30. I created a preset to use with this gym that so far has worked pretty consistently for each game I shoot. Workflow is pretty simple - Import photo, straighten and crop, click preset, export.

All these are with the T1i? I didn't realize 3200 ISO could look that good on that camera. Stunning.

Yep! I'm stuck with this camera until I can afford a 7D, although I'm pretty happy with the results I'm getting. Thanks for the comment!

How you doing tonight? with shots like what you are posting, you might NOT need the 7D.
Maybe get some better glass for indoor sport shooting.

Hey Joe, just got back from shooting an away game in Hedgesville. It's an older school and the lighting is horrendous. Getting ready to process the pics and will post some later. Hopefully I get some keepers. I definitely would like to get some better glass. Maybe the 85 1.8 or 24-70 2.8.

I will look forward to seeing some more of your posts again. Our Friday night game got delayed because of no school today. The HS game is on for tomorrow.. so I have a game to shoot on Saturday, then giving myself off on Sunday to watch football...
