Hi everyone,

Just looking for some opinions. I want to upgrade my XTi with a newer body. I mainly shoot nature and macro. I am wanting a body with better noise control, better AF and metering. Also I want to be able to use live view focus for when I'm doing macro.

I am considering either a used 50d or a new T2i. Both are pretty much the same price. We do not have the CLP in Canada so that's not an option for me. I don't need video so that doesn't matter either. If I went with the T2i I would grip it.

How do they compare? What would you go with and why?

I would get the T2i. Newer sensor (same as 60D/7D) and video is cool to have even if you don't use it. Now if you want to shoot sports or anything with faster burst mode, or want better AF, then get the 50D. really if you could squeeze a bit more out of your budget and get a 60D it would be the best of both worlds (almost).

Since the 50D is not available new, I would suggest the T3i or 60D. T2i would not be a big upgrade from the XTi...

If you are looking for used, then I would suggest the 50D.

Thanks for all the replies. Here is roughly what the prices for the bodies are in Canada based on some of my latest searching.

60D - $900
T3i - approx $750
T2i - approx $600
50D (used) - approx $600

My first choice would be the 60D but it is much too expensive for me. I'm thinking my second choice would be the T3i but from reviews I've read there didn't seem to be much difference other than the flip screen and most of the reviews said if it was for photography and not video to save the money and get the T2i.

50D would get my vote. Better AF, faster burst speed, MA capability for lenses, top LCD and far better control layout (rear dial for settings and joystick for focus point selection).

I would go for the T2i, but if your budget will allow more get the T3i only because you shoot macro and you would definitely benefit from the flip out screen. Believe me. If the T3i is out of your budget you'll be just fine with the T2i. I wouldn't recommend buying used unless it's coming from canon clp program. I would buy a new rebel over any used xxd or xd, but that's just me.

For what it is worth, you could get a refurbished 60D from Adorama for $750 taxed and shipped around Christmas time. Theirs comes with a one-year warranty IIRC. I bought mine around that time from Canon when they had their refurbished sale taxed and shipped second-day Fex Ex for a few dollars less than that (body only).

Good deals are out there if you really dig around. A used 50D is a great choice, too, if you aren't going to ever be shooting video. While the rebels are solid cameras, the 50D and 60D would represent a solid move up from your xti IMO.

The swivel screen makes macro a whole lot easier.

So I bit the bullet and ordered a T3i today. It was good deal so I couldn't pass it up.

T3i with nifty fifty for $650. A lot of places are selling the T3i body alone for $700+. So once it arrives I'll put the 50mm on my XTi and put it for sale to help pay for some of the upgrade.

I tried to sell my XTi body (locally) in December and the most I was offered was $125 so I took it off the market. Maybe now with a lens I can get close to $200. It only has about 7000 actuations but nobody was interested in just a body. Does $200 seem fair?

despite the earlier comment, you'll probably notice a huge difference in the jump to T2/3i

The low light capability compared to the XSi is night and day. I don't even hesitate using ISO 1600 on the T2i. With some careful processing 3200 is even usable for commercial event use.

With a nifty I would ask at least 250, you should be able to get that. Or just keep your XTi as a second body, it's nice to have 2 at times.

I would keep the 50 1.8 and use it a bit. Once you've put a little wear on it then sell it, because even if you use it's once you will not get the resale value of a new lens. I just sold one that I used only twice but it was still used.

It's really a great lens to add your lens collection. I would think about keeping the XTi because the resale value isn't that great just check the prices on ebay.

Congrats on the T3i, you made the right choice.

I used to have the 50 1.8 and sold it after a month. I really didn't like it. It would be nice to have a 2nd body but I'll need to sell the XTi and put the money towards the new toy. :)
