those are gorgeous - I'm new to trying to shoot birds and have a bunch in the backyard. Having a hard time getting a sharp shot...any tips? and yes, my lens im trying (18-135) is probably part of the issue?

Very nice set! The back feathers of Red-bellied Woodpecker are playing tricks with my eyes. It almost looks like his back is an oil painting that is dripping. Was there a gust of wind that ruffled those feathers? It looks odd to for him to be so sharp otherwise. Neat!
Thanks everyone,
BobbyLove- We shoot with compact superzooms (these images are from our SX30 and S5-IS), so I'm not sure our techniques would translate readily for most DSLR users. But our little cameras do give us the advantage of long focal lengths and short minimum focus distances. I'm sure you'll want to get a longer lens though... it's very difficult to get close enough to most birds with 135mm.
dixiefried - The pattern on the Red-belly's cape is soft and diffused compared to the rest of its back. They're all like this to some extent, although it is very pronounced in that first shot.
A couple of other examples of this:
Happy birding all,
