I have a complex 2 part question...

I have a friend who has a canon 5D. He got the camera from someone who owed him money but had insurance on the camera and reported it stolen, my friend dropped the camera and is worried about sending in the camera into canon because it was reported stolen...will canon have any records of the camera being stolen? will they still repair the camera?

my other friend knows someone who is selling a nikon camera he got from craiglist, he is also concerned about the camera being stolen or if he would have a problem if he would ever need the camera repaired if the camera is stolen or had insurance...

what you guys think
thanks
Steve

I doubt Canon would know it was stolen. But more importantly, didn't this "someone" defraud the insurance company?

If your friend is worried about the Nikon, stay away from it.

This is funny as hell!
So the friend got the camera from another who owed him money and repaid by reporting it stolen and giving a stolen camera for what was owed... Even though it wasn't stolen.

So now said friend breaks camera and wants it repaired under warranty...

But another friend wants to buy a camera from Craigslist and is worried that someone may screw him in the same way others got screwed...

Let me think for a minute???

Well buying stolen equipment is a crime, and it's very possible that the insurance company sent the serial to canon. A broken camera needs to get fixed though, since it's worthless in its current state, so it's time to risk it.

Same with the Nikon. There's a reason most people like to get the box and all packaging when they buy something used.

It's also fairly funny that you post this with your name so prominent.

Either Friend 1 has a stolen camera (and should be in jail) or Friend 1 is complicit in insurance fraud (and should be in jail along with Friend 1's friend.) Irrespective, having reported the camera stolen, Friend 1's friend ceded ownership of the camera in exchange for the payout....

And now you tell us that Friend 2 is worried about being in possession of stolen property....

I don't know whether Canon, Nikon or other suppliers check lists of stolen gear... but I hope they do. It's friends like yours that drive insurance rates up to unaffordable levels and provide a market for stolen gear.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

another example on how bright criminals can be...

as an alternate option... let a 3rd party camera repair place fix it...

or have your friend claim it was re-stolen...

this service can track photos online which have been shot by your stolen camera. Haven't really tried but it sounds interesting though http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/ (external link)

I think the local police may have a camera repair centre & might point you in the right direction.
