I'm going to do a shoot in a small room and there might be issues with spill. I will probably use a speedlite for a hair light. Are there any particular advantages to getting one of the small grid attachments like the Opteka or HONL rather than just using a snoot?

I would use the grid. Its gonna spread the light evenly while still in a reasonably controlled spread with better looking fall off. Snoots tend to look a little hot in one area to me and i can tell it a snoot. I just like the spread better with the grid.

Grid

It's may be worth a DIY grid with straws. I've got a HONL grid, it's kind of awkward to use because it's larger than the flash head.

Windpig, how do you hold them onto your flash? I have the same "issue".

Call me a spendthrift but the time spent cutting straws and making the grid is worth more than the $13 for the Opteka grid on amazon.

I took a Sto-fen bounce attachment and cut the top off. I then put the stick-on velcro on to it. This allows my to pull it off the flash head when I don't need it.

The grid attaches to it via the velcro straps on the grid, but it kind of hangs on the flash head from the grid frame. As I say, it's kind of an awkward set up. It's a situation where some gaff tape comes in handy.

I don't like DIY projects, but this is one that I would do. You can use either blue painters masking tape or gaff tape to afix the grid to the speedlight.

I'll bet it has the same mounting issue the HONL does. It's difficult out of the box to secure it well enough to have it work if you try and aim the head down. At least that's been my experience.

I bought the immitation set from ebay for 50 bucks. It comes with 5 different sizes and might be overkill, but Ill never wish I had a different one. :D

The reviews seem to be mixed, but I suspect that as little as I would use it, mostly mounted on a stand that mounting doesnt worry me much. Anyway, I'd probably still have to fashion a mount for DIY solution anyway.

I'm not sure I understand the mounting issue? They strap on using velcro on the sides, so it sits pretty firmly over the top of the Flash. I've never had issues with it slipping or falling off. In fact, I often leave mine on the flash for extended periods of time, in my bag, while backpacking, etc...

If you put velcro on the front of them as well, you can then stack them, for even more direct beam of light.

Unless you really really need grids for $50 I might as well get cheapy eBay softbox.
