Don't set the strength slider high...that is the biggest culprit for Halos.

I pretty much exclusively use the Exposure Fusion method, which looks more natural and doesn't have the halo effect at all. I also do not like the halo effect.

And also remember that if you produce an image which you like and enjoy, but others don't, for whatever reason: that it's your image and you can have it however you like :-) It's your creative expression!

I love Photomatix, and sometimes go for the more real look a and use it simply when the scene has difficult lighting, other times deliberately over do it to surreal because I want to, and some subjects suit it.

As someone above said - it's about adjusting the sliders - I haven't read anything much about technique with Photomatix. I suppose there are tutorials out there ....

Yeas - I think we sometimes get up with all the other "stuff". As an aside, had just picked up a book today written by someone in the film days, and who was very much into creativity in photography, back in the film days. His advice was to look around your immediate environment and see the art and images there.

Reprocessed and made four virtual copies in Lightroom, as hadn't coped with lights and darks. Need to go back with tripod though.
