I went from Essentials to Pro, and am really pleased I paid the extra dollars. Seems great for more natural type images, although I also rather like the edgy ones. A few from today:

I just tried processing an image with Pro after using Essentilas - significant improvement:

This is my second attempt to process this, my first HDR image. The first was deemed to have "halo" affect. (see #734) So after watching a few utube videos I hope I have improved it? Can I also ask, is it any difference to convert Raw files to Tiff in Canon digital photo professional and then into Photomatix or just drag and drop Raw files straight into Photomatix because the seem to come out as Tiff files anyway?

Dave.

You've created a very realistic looking image here. As to the halo, I'm sure you can see it yourself around the tree. However, it does not hug tightly to the high contrast borders between the tree and sky, and is quite feathered and faint and is almost unnoticeable.

The tiffs: a version ago when I used photomatix more regularly, I ran many tests. In my tests, with my files, there was clearly a difference in at least noise - photomatix seemed to insert more noise into the image when the raw files were imported as opposed to the 16-bit tiffs. But YMMV and I do not know if that still holds true in the newer version. Best thing to do is run some tests yourself.

I have Pro 4.0 and was wondering if it was worth upgrading to 5.0

It should be free - I have found it to be a significant improvement over v4.

Not free for me as I got a free upgrade from pro 3 to pro 4 - you get the free upgrade only once.

Can you say more about what was significantly improved? Thanks.

and meant to say - loved that image Paul! Even although I'm basically a country type girl at heart I do love to see some of these incredible HDRs of cities. Loved Shanghai when I went there almost three years ago, and would love to go back with current camera and a bit more knowledge.

Gosh I had a high end Panasonic point and shoot then, and now am on my second DSLR!
