Want to use a Markins Head

I've been using a 488RC2 head on Manfrotto 055ProB legs for a number of years and I want to upgrade the head in order to use an L bracket. The pan base for the head and the mount base on the tripod are the same size.

I'd like to use a Markins head but the bases are: Q10-62mm and Q20-68mm. The base on my tripod is only 60mm.

Does anyone see an issue with this 'overhang' Eventually I will upgrade the tripod as well but I don't want to do both upgrades at once.

Nope, for those legs, get a Q10 and later you can upgrade the legs to a Gitzo 2-series and youll be set!

I've got a Q-30 and it fits my 055 legs just fine. Great choice, it's a world of difference from the 488RC2.

Ben:

It's only $40 difference between the Q10 and the Q20.Would I kick myself down the road?

It's 5 kilos load capacity difference between two. Unless you absolutely must support 50 kilos on ballhead :) Q-10 should be fine.
I personally found that for my needs Q3 Traveler is more than enough, easily holds 70-200 MK II with TC 2x even when attached to the camera body not lens collar, it is rated 35 kg, don't know what I need to throw on it to exceed that.
Sold my M10 shortly after getting Q3T.

Honestly it really doesnt work like that. See all the Markins heads are actually overkill for the gear most people use. Even the Q3T would probably do more than fine for you. I have used the 100-400L on the Q3T with no issues at all. So we mostly buy Markins heads to match the Gitzo (or in your case Manfrotto) legs we are pairing them with. The 055 series of Manfrotto legs are roughly the size of the 2-series Gitzos, so the Q10 is the way you wanna go. Unless you plan to purchase one of the larger Canon lenses in the future like a 500L or 600L etc, the Q10 will be more than youll ever need.

I don't think so either. The Q10 works great on bigger legs also if you upgrade...

...its the perfect weight combination and support for my purposes.

Exactly what Ben said, it's mostly the head base matching tripod ballhead mounting plate issue, not weight capacity. If ballhead base is smaller than tripod plate the camera will be hitting tripod in portrait orientation when using ballhead drop-notch. This is not an issue with L-Plate.

right; whichever one is the large one. I've been out of power and frozen for two days, so the synapses aren't on top of their game. Typing on a phone isn't great fun, either.

I went from a 498RC2 and 190Pro legs, to the Gitzo 3451 and the Markin Q20. I love it.
It may not be the last tripod I ever buy, but it's going to take a pretty good agrument to
to get me to do so... (Possibly involving hammers and knee caps :-P )

I'm like Ben as well. I have the Gitzo 1541T and Q3T for when I fly off to someplace interesting
and don't have the space for the full size tripod. It also folds up and tucks away in my backpack
out of sight, and is light enough that I don't notice it.

I've been using the M10 on an 055 and more recently a CX3PRO (both Manfrotto) and I still believe I'm in love with it. Prior to the M10 I used a Manfrotto ballhead with the RC2 qr system, but I have to say that what I've got now is a thousand times better.

I have combined the M10 with the RRS lever clamp QR (Arca Swiss) system.

Evan;

That is my point. I'm sure I'll upgrade the tripod next and I'd like this purchase to be the last head I buy.I'm not really worried if it is more than I need right now, I'm just wondering if both the Q10 and Q20 would work with my Manfrotto legs for the time being. My next photo trip is to UT but the farthest from the rental would only be 5-6kms at a time so I'm not concerned with the weight of the 055ProB.

Somebody said that 64kb of RAM was all we'd ever need.
