I've been using a 488RC2 head on Manfrotto 055ProB legs for a number of years and I want to upgrade the head in order to use an L bracket. The pan base for the head and the mount base on the tripod are the same size.

I'd like to use a Markins head but the bases are: Q10-62mm and Q20-68mm. The base on my tripod is only 60mm.

Does anyone see an issue with this 'overhang' Eventually I will upgrade the tripod as well but I don't want to do both upgrades at once.

The 'overhang' which you mentioned is a non-issue.

I did the ballhead change to Markins M10-Q (arca-swiss standard) a few years ago and I won't be going back to the Manfrotto ballhead anymore. My tripod is still the old Manfrotto 190ProB which refuses to go quietly into the night.

I'm sure I'll upgrade the tripod next and I'd like this purchase to be the last head I buy.I'm not really worried if it is more than I need right now, I'm just wondering if both the Q10 and Q20 would work with my Manfrotto legs for the time being. My next photo trip is to UT but the farthest from the rental would only be 5-6kms at a time so I'm not concerned with the weight of the 055ProB.

Somebody said that 64kb of RAM was all we'd ever need.

LOL. It's good to future-proof something like a support system though. Who knows what gear you might get in the future? Personally I like overkill when it comes to support so my regular head/tripod is way too good for the gear, but some day I'll be on a mountain in a gale and it'll be stable.

Do you have any idea what you might upgrade your tripod to in the future?

The Gitzo GT 3541 is at the top of my list right now.

I have the 20 and love it. It is heavy for sure. The overhang is less then 3/16 all the way around an it is insignificant. I am quite sure that no matter which Markin head you choose, it is going to meet your expectations. Good luck

Well a systematic like that, provided you upgrade to it, will be better off with a Markins Q20. I use a 3541LS and my head is an Arca-Swiss Z1 which I think is a bit bigger than a Q20. The overhang of a Q20 on what you're currently using would not be a problem at all.
