Question about RF-603, shutter release, and pre-trigger

I use back button focus on my 7D. Was trying to remote trigger with RF-603s in one-shot mode. Noticed that focus wasn't getting set (didn't hear the beep). I set camera to auto (green box) with shutter controlling exposure and shutter, and it works well. Is this as expected?

You cannot use any remote trigger that I have seen or used and get focus to work when set to back button focus. Think about it. The remote is the shutter button. You moved focus off the shutter button and to the back button.

Makes sense thanks. I basically creating a custom setup (C1) which is the exact same as my usual setup, but with the shutter set for AF and metering.
