Anyone else here sell their 24-70L for the 35L? I recently sold my 24-105L for the 35L and really haven't looked back.

I got the 70-200L IS II last year and have it "planted" on my 7D always, and I found I was using the 24-105L at the 24-60mm range, It was then a toss up between the 24-70L, 35L, or the 50L and I decided to buy the 35mm as the 50mm was too close to 85 (plus 35mm on a 7D becomes a 50mm).

But I was pretty torn between 24-70L vs 35L, I was a bit worried about the weddings and not using the zoom, but I found in the last few shoots I did, that I "thought" alot more about the composition before taking it. All in all, I think the 35L trumps the "general-purpose zoom".

Of course for tighter compositions and tighter headshots I use my 85mm or the 70-200 but for alot of other things the 35L rocks.

I sold my 35L and 85L for the 24-70L. No regrets at all. I much prefer the 24-70L. Wider, sharp, more convenenient. Overall I just prefer the 24-70L.

For the rare situations where I really need a lens faster than f/2.8 on 35mm, I have the 50L. I guess if there was one other focal length where I could use faster than f/2.8 other than 50, it might be 35, but so far not often enough to make me reconsider.

I have both.. I'd have a hard time choosing, but if I had to, for my style of shooting, I'd take the 24-70.

I really like the philosophical aesthetic of shooting primes. Though honestly in your shoes I'd have bought the 24-70, I wouldn't be disappointed with either. The 35mm focal length is legendary. Combine that with L quality and you have a winner.

OP, I did EXACTLY that. There have been times when I missed the 24-70, but I really love my 35L most of all :)

The 24-70 would come in handy for outdoor events and many other situations - I may start re-investing in zooms. Having foolish pride in being a prime-only shooter results in nothing but missed shots and a filthy sensor.

It’s the opposite for me! I’m a wedding photographer and as much as I loved the 35L, I missed the versality of a 24-70mm. 35L was a truly SHARP lens, trust me. But so is the 24-70!

If your using 2 bodies the 35L and longer fl prime or 70-200 will be fine. I just find the 24-70L a workhorse with ultimate versatility for faster paced events.

No way I'd ever sell the 24-70L......until mk2 comes out of coarse :)

One thing to note is the zoom you can change the perspective with foot zooming aswell. The primes you have a "given" perspective that cannot be manipulated. Call if you will "built in perspective" with a prime.

On the other hand you can get lazy and zoom with no foot work and get documented photography with a snapshot "feel". This is where a prime can force you to work for the image but potentially making "eye candy".

This is where working with a 24L changes perspective even though its not far off from a 35L. So this is why a 24-70L can be a powerful tool due to changing perspective and FL as you zoom.

Not to start a war, but a lens does not give you a perspective - it gives you a view. You choose your perspective by where you're standing. Using a 35mm lens when it's not appropriate can cause a non-flattering or awkward perspective. I guess you should shoot in perspective-priority and pick a lens/FL to make it happen :)

This is why I sometimes prefer using zooms. 35mm is a safe bet and you cannot really make unflattering perspectives. This is where the 35mm or 50mm can be a boring prime to use because the perspective will look the same from frame to frame if your framing your subject the same in every shot.

The 24L you can start making weird funky looks if you get too close to the subject.

Erik if buy a 16-35Lmk2 or 24L with your 1.3 crop you'll LOVE IT!! the 35L on a 1.3 crop body is real safe in terms of perspective. I really enjoyed throwing on my 17-40L with my previous 1dmk3.

AWESOME video.

Its truly amazing how many do fall into the zoom "trap" and NOT move their feet. I hope this video sheds some light into putting some more flavor in their photos.

If your shooting with flash or in a situation where you must shoot alot of group shots at events I think zooms are killer versatile. Get some "pop" shooting f/2.8 or stop down to play it safe getting no OOF shots of groups.

35L or 50mm is soooooooooo safe when it comes to not messin' up perspective badly. If your running and gunning with two bodies I feel confidence in the IQ I'll be getting with a 35L. Using a f/2.8 zoom in an interior scenario using available light I prefer using a prime for IQ.

When it comes to flash photography you just have to determine if your playing it safe with f/2.8 zoom or if you wanna go shallow dof with a prime w/ flash. If your shooting primarily groups I'll throw the prime in the bag and whip out the 24-70L.

great video. i just got the 35L and i've contemplated on selling my 24-70 a few times now just because it doesn't get used anymore. it is probably the most versatile lens i've used, but the weight of it has really made us grow apart. (and one of the biggest reason why i got the 35L) i think i'm going to keep it around for the times that i might need the flexibility of the zoom (vacations, events, etc) because i think i'll regret selling it. just keep both.

The video seems to further emphasize my point.

24-70L and flash exposure at an indoor event will blow away the 35L in some respects. Infinite perspective with a zoom while the 35L your stuck with one perspective.

Most non photogs cannot determine this perspective thing. They just have a "feel" of the photo. The 35L at an entire event will have 1 "feel" while a zoom can change the perspective dramatically from 24mm to 70mm.

If i'm determined to shoot with available light I'll use my primes but gun with two bodies or even 3. If I'm using flash exposure or supplemental fill I'll gladly use a zoom.
