TSA personnel 'helping themselves' to traveler luggage.

Pack your camera bag, run it through security and keep it with you at all times while traveling.

This is the exception rather than the norm. There are always going to be thieves and no matter how much you try to plan around them they will find ways to take your stuff. Keeping it with you is most certainly a good option but when you travel with more gear than you can legally carry on an aircraft you have to check it. Its not only airports where this can be a problem. Cruise lines, hotels and virtually anywhere else you might be can leave you vulnerable to theft.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I'd say the big "flag" here is the fact that it was an iPhone. There is a large market for cell phones and now I imagine iPads and such, consumer devices that would be easy to pocket and are easy to sell off.

I've never considered doing it any differently. My pack with my camera gear and 17" laptop stays with me all the way.

About 3 trips ago, my wife's suitcase came out of the baggage system literally crushed. There is no way it could have been damaged as it was except by being run over by a rather heavy vehicle. Had there been any camera gear inside, it would have been destroyed. It would not have made any difference if it was hard or soft sided - the damage was too extensive.

I have never been one to be checking gear in. That can't happen for pro shoots because without the gear, my job at the other end won't be done well. Getting the right bag is key. I have heard so many friends lose their cameras, even little P&S they left in their luggage. It's a sad thing, but it's just how the world is now.

The only thing I check is my tripod, I found they vary in their reaction to it so I pack in with my clothing.

I'd never check any of my gear...I have my tricks to stay under the weight limit, though, regardless of how much stuff I'm carrying on ;)

Since I don't fly, because TSA is a farce and for the most part ineffective at doing anything other than catching evil cupcakes, and flying is such a hassle and a major pain in the ass, and I would rather see the world than fly 600mph over it, I don't have this problem.

But when flying was easier and I didn't have all the bull****, I carried everything valuable with me.

Guess you don't travel very far then. I have to disagree that it's a hassle. Much as I like road trips, it isn't always possible to drive, and even a relatively slow, multistop flight is still faster than the freeway.

Where I'm going in the Bahamas in February can't be done any other way. And I wouldn't even if I could. I have 1 week to go 2000 miles each way. I've been to the Philippines, Italy, all over the Caribbean, both coasts of Mexico, Central America.... if I didn't fly I'd have never done any of that. Life would be pretty dull.

Not to argue but the Bahamas is just a boat ride from florida. Done it a couple times. No doubt you knew that, but others may not be aware.

The reason I know this happens: Wife's daughter and boyfriend returning from a 7 day trip from San Francisco to LA had both their cameras removed from their checked luggage. Two cameras and all the pics they took.

My original post was another reminder to help everyone keep their gear safe from potential loss.

And you most likely went to Nassau. Try looking for a boat that will get you to Long Island (Bahamas, not New York). There is one and one only. That is the domestic mail boat and it's a 17 hour trip from Nassau to Long Island. And it doesn't run every day. Even flying offers a limited schedule, and you have to go through Nassau to fly to the Deadman's Cay airport because you have to pass through immigration in Nassau.

My point was that there are a lot of places which are not reasonably accessible in any way but by air, and refusing to fly because it's a "hassle" is just limiting one's self for no good reason.
