Another really interesting read, since you're into tech history:

hehehe, okay, whatever. You're trolling and it's obvious that your hatred for Apple has completely blinded you to common sense. We'll see what shakes out.

You seem confused. I don't hate Apple, I just don't worship them. I recognize their actual place in history and in the current market rather than some idealized place that forces me to spend more for less on products with their logo.

You do know that people have been claiming that Apple would falter etc.. and that the iPad was just a phase and that it would be killed by competition for almost two years now, yet it keeps getting stronger and stronger?

Two years isn't very long.

Apple will likely not "falter" as a company but they are not a dominant player in computers and they won't be in phones before long.

They own the market for tablets right now but I doubt that will last based on the "history repeats itself" premise. Those who close systems and try to own markets (Apple with the Mac, IBM with the PS/2 and Microchannel and so on) to keep margins high always get taken out by lower priced competitors.

Of course that's not guaranteed, but then neither is tomorrow's sunrise.

You know that the number of Americans owning tablets shot up by 10 percent to 19 percent between mid-December and early January, nearly doubling the number of tablet owners?

And in spite of most of those being iPads a good number were Kindle Fire's and other inexpensive alternatives.

You know that the iPhone accounted for 4.3 million of the 7.7 million smartphones sold last quarter? That's over 50%. This has been a trend for quite a few quarters.

Actually that bucked the trend for the last half dozen or so quarters. The iPhone 4S caused the surge and I predict that the numbers will be back to where they were (Android outselling iOS 2-1 or better) with next quarter's numbers.

I think the problem is that you're stuck in the past (I guess being a PC history buff will do that eh?) and cling to things like desktop OS market share (like that is even relevant anymore?).

Those that refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Desktops are still the dominant platform by miles and miles. And, to paraphrase your quote above, people have been predicting the end to desktops for decades with nobody being right yet.

You can't seem to wrap your head around the facts that massive growth in all sectors by Apple, clearly shows that what your prophesying, isn't going to happen any time soon.

Growth and relative growth are two different things...

If you look at it another way: Apple is the largest microcontroller customer in the world, they're the largest flash memory customer in the world, and they're the largest display customer in the world.

Do the math, where are all of these things going? If they're also the top in manufacturing as well, and they're the #1 retail store in the world (think about that for a minute), how can even argue as you are?

Because they are one company competing against hundreds of others.

They are the biggest in their niche but they are not the biggest in the markets.

When the Apple][was the big player people built peripherals for it, wrote software for it and so on. When the Mac had a 2-3% market share it was starved for these things and, as such, wasn't a desirable alternative to the millions of PC clones available at the time.

Apple still has sufficient maretshare, even with their low percentages, to garner this support now. Wait a few years, though, to when Android phones are 70%+ of the market with Windows phones in second place and apps developers will rush away from iOS as fast as they raced towards it.

When a buyer has a choice between a $200 Android or a $500 Apple phone and the former has twice the speed, more features, a bigger screen and 10 times the apps I am sure that all but the fanboys will make the right decision.

Here's another interesting stat:

Apple is now selling more iPhones a day then people are being born, on the planet. 377,900 iPhones a day vs the world's average birth rate which is 371,000. Yeah, that's pretty incredible.

Which means that there are somewhere around 600K Android phones being sold a day...

As for where marketshare is going, do me a favor and read this:

http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/?p=30686 (external link)

Note: that was from A WEEK AGO, so it's pretty relevant, I think.

Here's an interesting graph, to help illustrate where you're wrong:

QUOTED IMAGE

Mapping the surge due to the iPhone 4s introduction (another once-a-year Apple event) isn't really relevant. Give me a longer range graph for real trending.

[Shakes head in dismay]... apparently I'm pissing up a rope here.

This is my final post in this thread, but I may check in again in a year or so, and we'll compare then, okay?

by the way, did you look at that last link I posted? It's pretty telling of the history of Apple and I think it says volumes about Apple's position in this industry.

Anyways, have a good day, it's been fun debating with you. Thanks!

Yep. Twisting facts to fit a stylized version of reality will do that to ya.

Yep. Lots of interesting stuff in there including a ton of companies that looked like they couldn't fail before they did.

For instance the Commodore 64 still holds the world's record for most sold computer model of all time...

Any time and thank you as well.

It's fun to see this perspective from others and not just my wife. ;)
