Interesting finding, Jason. I noticed the contrary with my 7D.
When i used AF-point expansion + Main Focus Point Priority on a scenario where there was a perched bird, showing up about 10% of the frame. I have the "main" center AF point on him, thinking that should nail the focus. However, one of the AF-Expansion points picked up some leaves' movement a few inches in front of the bird (in other words, leaves were between me and the bird). Since i have "Main Focus Point Priority" set instead of "Continuous AF Track Priority" for my AI Servo, it ended up picking the leaves to focus on.
Similarly, I would imagine for the OP, to avoid having the AF incorrectly focus on the nose of the dog, shooting WITHOUT the Expansion points is probably going to yield more keeper.

I do find the AF Expansion comes in handy for bird-inflight where the subject stands out clearly against a pure background (blue sky).

Certainly there are times when that setting would yield less than optimal results. I personally wouldn't use either when shooting a bird with lots of obstructions around. I would use single point or spot and in that case continuous or main point is irrelevant (because of only using a single point). I have found that sometimes individuals get conflicting results with the same settings based. For that I don't have an explanation. I have found that to be the case with both my 7D (now sold) and my 1DIV.

Which AF are you using on your 7D, zone, expansion? I'm trying to lear how to use my AI Servo and want to use it more but seem to be getting more and more frustrated. I will try your settings tonight.

Thanks,
Eric

Kenji, just one thing you said, and I don't really know if it makes a difference: You said you were changing focal length a lot. Were you waiting until you stopped zooming to start taking the photos? I don't know, maybe with the settings you've had you can't even take a photo while you are still zooming, but it might be worth thinking about.

Bob

Hello,
well if I can chime in on this..

I have set my 7D up for basketball , volleyball, sports settings from the sportshooter.com web posts and here on this forums..advice.
Most of the time I am locked on the bball player and I know he is coming right at me I might get one good shoot of him coming up the court.
If he stops with the ball I get another good shot, BUT when he starts to move I think the tracking is not keeping up with the player.. so I am missing some great shots becuse of OOF..blurr movement.
SS is @ 640 & 800, f2 & iso of about 3200-4000 , no flash...
This happens with all my lens... and my Canon 50D seems to track better... anybody out there see this happing too...

go figure.. I am still in the testing phase.. and the 7D and 135 f2 lens have been to canon... I ahve to say I have been getting some great help on this forum in the sport section, hats off to you all...

thanks,
Joe..

Admittedly entirely possible, i actually didnt even think of this

Also a follow-up, Thanks for all the positive comments, I will note thats a fraction of what i shot that day, Though overall the results were pleasant (There were 300-something, 8fps shooting tears through a card!)

I did shoot some more with my modified adjustments (As i said in the first post) and it seemed to have helped quite a bit, though i havnt had time to check them on the computer, They did look better on the rear screen so thats something ;)

Just thought id resurrect this to help other users...

Shot with my C.Fn adjustments a few times, and modified them some more, Found out I actually wanted to go the -other- way with the "speed" setting... so now im at +1 instead of -1...

Also found that using All area 19pt works best it seems...

After making those adjustments my hit rate is noticably even better than before... Not that it was that bad before but hey ;)
