Being self employed, I got out of it easily. Just said the business needs me, and it kinda does.
That has always been my excuse, and usually there's no problem. I did get into a heated argument with a judge in San Jose one time who chose to give me a stern lecture about doing my civic duty. I asked the judge if he would please be my witness if I ever got sued because I was not in my office supervising the activities of the 75 real estate agents who worked for me. He wouldn't excuse me, but one of the attorneys used a preemptive challenge to let me go as it was clear my attitude was going to be pretty s**tty.
