It just sends an odd message or something. He could have killed it in a way that is more digestible by the general public. I always got the message "you have no toys, we just let you play with them"  In Virginia, where my niece lives, they lend a hand to parents when kids get their driver license. The parent and child go before a judge in a court room and the judge gives the parent the license and tells them both that the license is the parents and they can revoke it at any time until the age of 18.
