Just got back from CES about a week ago, and got to spend about 10 minutes with this camera. Some impressions:

1) Its big, in an in between sort of way. Its too big to fit in a pocket, even in a pinch, due to the lens. It is smaller than most of the m4/3 cameras though, and similarly sized to the Nikon one.

2) It works just like a G series. If you shoot one of these, you will adapt quickly. I do miss the ISO dial though.

3) From a design standpoint, its a bit of a mess, especially when compared some of the very artful bodies coming from fuji and olympus. The viewfinder is big and oddly square, and sticks out awkwardly. The rubberized thumb rest looks tacked on.

4) The lens isn't particularly fast, nor is it wide or long.

As mentioned on the web, I wasn't able to insert a memory card, so I can't judge the images. I have no doubt they will be impressive, though.

In the end, its not the camera for me, but I have no doubt it will have its audience.

I was surprised that Canon came out with such a camera. For that price you can get your hands on a good T3i. I have a G12, which I like a lot, but it's not the 5D2 and never will be. I am disappointed that you didn't get a chance to take any images with it as I'm curious how much better it is than the G12. Still, would I pay double for what I paid for the G12 to get a little better images? I doubt it. And it's bigger, which isn't what most people want in that market. Interesting that Canon has gone in this direction.

Thanks for sharing your impressions.

Actually I am thinking to get one, since I went to college I had no time to play with my Mark II and I always play with G12 instead. Well, the IQ isn't the same, but it do good enough for me for now.

I was torn to buy X100 instead before I look at the ISO sample of Gx, and I'm impressed!

I've been reading the G1X User Guide and comparing it to my G12, http://lightdescription.blogspot.com …r-guide-notes-part-2.html (external link)

For better or worse, the G1X is much more similar to the G12 than it is different. I'm pretty happy with most of the similarities because I'll quickly get comfortable with the G1X.

Topic title is off: GX1 is a Panasonic camera. G1 X (like 1D X, see?) is the Canon title.

So, just to confirm - you're put off by the DSLR-like ergonomics and the large viewfinder, mattograph? This camera really does seem set to replace the usual DSLR with a kit lens only.

First off -- right about the title. Wish I could fix that. (fixed)

2nd, I guess I wasn't clear. The viewfinder housing is large -- it protrudes a great bit from the back of the camera. The actual view is not any better than the G12, and is blocked a great deal by the lens when you soon out.

Ergonomically, it is a virtual twin to the current g series -- with the exception of the iso into the menu.

I would argue that it will replace a DSLR -- its not much smaller than a rebel with a kit lens, and not near as responsive -- perhaps a tad bit heavier. I really think this camera is all about the new sensor. I think the G2 X will really be the camera to buy.

Oops, meant to say that I'd quickly get comfortable with the G1X (have one on pre-order).

I have just read reviews on the GX 1 camera, not seen or used one. I have a G 12.

I like the GX 1's bigger sensor.

But what I don't like about the new GX 1 is as follows:

  • Lack of interchangeable lenses when so many small, non dslr cameras are out and have this feature.
  • Lack of ISO dial...love this on my G 12.
  • $ 799 in the USA. ...wonder what it will be up here in Canada !! Too much, can get into a small, entry DSLR for that price.

I also wonder if the G 12 is or will be discontinued ? Maybe there's still a place in the scheme of things for this handy little camera.

I've heard that's what the rumors from the digital camera bloggers saying *The G1 X doesn't replace the G12*.. but I am not sure if canon confirmed that..

Actually, the Canon rep told me that the G1 X is more of successor to the original G1, not to replace the Gxx series. Which is funny in a way, because that camera featured an electronic view finder and L glass -- two features that, had they been included, would have made this new camera a winner.

This camera illustrates how out of touch Canon is. I won't be buying this one. I'll move on to the Fiji X1 .

The powershot G1, the first camera of the Gxx series, has an optical viewfinder and the lens is not an L.

To my knowledge, the only powershot with an L lens is the powershot Pro1. It has an electronic viewfinder. After many years waiting for the Pro2, that was never released, people started to think that the Pro1 is a one of a kind camera.

The designation G1 X suggest that this camera starts a new series of powershots and is not a replacement of the previous G series cameras.
