Good advice from everyone so far..i'll add one thing...

Focus on focus...you don't have to nail the exposure..or the composition, those things can generally be fixed in post processing if you got it close...but you HAVE to nail the focus. Shoot with a narrower aperture than you otherwise might for things that have sufficient light or if you're using flash.

Composition can't be changed in post. You can crop, but composition means choosing your lens length, your height from the ground, and your angle to the subject.

Good point, there are definitely other things to consider regarding composition than just crop.

I still think for a first time wedding for his sister who will have no photos otherwise, that composition is not something he should be worrying about during the wedding. I just think there are too many other things to think about in the fast pace of a wedding.

Something else I learned from being new to weddings...

I'm trying to learn and shoot wide alot and crop afterwards. The composition is there but shooting wide allows you the flexibility to do vertical/horizontal or changing the ratios to cover 4x6 to 8x10s. Sometimes its hard for me to offer 8x12's and 8x10's of the same photo.

"Focus on focus" - This is such a good point.

Interestingly, I find I get far more slightly off focused pictures with EOS AF than I ever did with manual focus and a split image screen!
