I just picked up one of these lenses, really impressed so far.One thing I noticed is strange manual focus operation, and wasn't sure if there is something wrong with my lens? With previous lenses I owned in manual focus I would just focus and hit the shutter and it was done. With this lens it seems to require a focus confirmation before the shutter will engage,if u don't get that confirmation the shutter will do nothing. Is this normal operation for this lens?

Is your lens set to AF or M? Is your camera set to one shot or servo?

My shutter always fires with the lens set to M. Though sometimes I do get the beep.

I've used manual focus to get a softer shot at times and have nevever needed a focus confirmation to activate the shutter. In any case, seems more of a problem with the camera than it is with the lens.

I shot fireworks last night with my 17-50 all in manual focus after determining where it needed to be with no confirms or issues. I have only done manual focusing in m and av modes though, maybe if you are not in a manual mode it needs confirm? What mode are you shooting, maybe that is it?

Everything is relative.

At the end of the day it's not something I am going to use,but I would like to know in my head the lens is performing properly.

What mode are you using the camera on? Manual, AV, P, or one of the preset modes....

It doesn't matter what mode,it does the same thing. It bugged me enough to take it in to my local camera store, they told me its performing as it should so I left it at that.At the end of the day having focus confirmation in MF aint a bad thing.
