I've read numerous posts about dropped gear and never thought it would happen to me.

Well...............it did!

I dropped my 5DII and 24-105 today onto ceramic tile. The lens too all of the impact and shattered the UV filter. It bent the filter in on one side so that there's no way for me to remove it.

The frone element has a few small scratches on it but that seems to be it.

The lens still zooms in like normal and the IS and focusing seem fine.

2 questions:

1. Do I need to send it to Canon to have them remove the old filter ring?

2. Should I send it to canon just incase the optics are screwed up. If so, how much does this typically run?

I have not taked any shots with the lens to see if the focus is off or not.

Wonder if the filter's sharp pieces damaged the front element?

i'd send it to canon or sell it on ebay as-is. i recently had my 24-105L calibrated and cleaned. i paid the minimum charge of $269. shipping was another $24.

Yikes!!

I need an all purpose zoom. This one has been a workhorse for me for the past 18 months.

Only issue I have is getting the filter(what's left of it) off. I don't want to put any more pressure on it than needed but I also don't want to pay $300 to have it removed.

I took a few shots with it just now and it seems fime. IS works, lens zooms and it seems like it's focusing properly.

If everything still works then do not send it in. If it starts acting up then send it it.

You might have to get rough in order to get that filter housing off. Watch that you don't ruin the front lens element. Maybe put some masking tape on it just to be safe.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

More than likely the lens is just fine.

To remove the filter ring, maybe try the traditional methods first.

- put a wide rubber band around the ring to give you extra grip and try to twist it off

- if you have got steady hands and the guts, wrap a cloth over the front of the lens, exposing just a little piece of the filter ring. Take a pair of pointed pliers and with the tips of the pliers get a hard grip on the ring without pushing downward and twist the pliers in a circle, twisting an S form in the ring. The ring should now be loose and twist or lift out easily.

- take it to a local camera shop. They do this kind of thing all the time, and will probably use one of the foregoing methods for ten bucks, but taking no liability.

I chose option 2!

Masking tape over the element, a pair of vice grips and a disturbed look on my wifes face. The filter ring is now off.

The threads on my lens are stripped. In the spot where the filter caved in. This means I'll need a fix on it to use another filter.

you can buy the 24-105L used for around $800 and since your still works fine i'll bet you could get $6-700 for it on ebay. that's what i'd do.

Nah, be happy, you have added a hunk to your photographic experience. :D

Your lens is fine, you don't need any filter but a cirpol, as you have just found out, and I'll bet you can scrape out the place where the threads are stripped and a cirpol will go in just fine, when you need it that is.

Can you take a photo of the thread? Is it actually damaged badly? Simply turning another filter onto it may clean the threads up enough.
