The $999 macbook air is basically a netbook with an 11" screen, a 1.6ghz CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB flash card instead of a HD. The $1199 macbook pro has a dual core 2.4ghz, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, 13" screen and a DVDR drive. Even if you buy the top end $1599 air, you'd have to use an external DVD drive and hard drive and the processor is much slower. SSD's are better and faster than normal hard drives. I haven't put a disk into my macbook pro in 3 years. So no, you don't NEED to buy a DVD drive or another hard drive. But yes, the process power of an air pales in comparison with the macbook pro.

The solid state hard drive is pretty cool, amazingly light weight...but I don't think it's versatile enough for what I intend to use a laptop for.
