Junior Wrestling - C&C Appreciated

Been a while since my last post. A few are from tournaments and a a few are from league matches.

For the tournament photos, I am using a 580 EX on my 1d Classic. Set to ETTL.

For the league matches, I am using a 580 EX on the 1d Classic and a 420 EX off camera fired by the 580.

All are shot with the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8, iso is 400, SS is 1/250th.

And here are a few of my 4 year old. He won his first match yesterday and it was neat to get to see him wrestle kids his own size. NOrmally he wrestles kids that are heavier and older and bigger. But we had a 35 lb. weight class and he is 32 pounds.

These are great! I have a similar setup except I use the Canon 70-200 f/4 on a 7D body. Can I ask how you have your speedlights setup? Is the 580ex bouncing off the ceiling or pointed directly at the mat? The 420ex off camera...how far away is that from where you are shooting and at what location in relation to you is it stationed? Is the 420ex pointed directly at the mat or is it bouncing off the ceiling?

I hope to get similar results but am wondering how to best arrange the lights around the mat.

Great shots, the last few with the blonde boy are fantastic, his facial expression is priceless.
And as always TACK sharp and spot on with the lighting.

Here are a few examples of my wrestling shots so far. For all of these I was only using the 580exII on camera...lighting is pretty harsh.

I place the off camera flash on one corner of the mat and I sit on the same side to avoid the flash firing into my camera while shooting. I would say we are 10-15 feet apart from one another.

I point the 420 directly at the wrestlers and I point the 580 almost straight up. I angle it slightly and I normally pull out the white paper to direct the flash forward.

Everything is set to ETTL and the 580 fires the 420.

I wait for the wrestlers to face me so I can obviously have their faces in the shot.

On the single strobe shots, I am as close to the circle I can get without getting noticed by the ref's, But most know me by now and they give me a little more room than the parents normally get.

Did you have a diffuser on your 420?
