I think it would be nice to clean up the rust or at least de-emphasize it a bit.

No it's not...product photos are designed to sell the product. Learn PP and remove the stain.

Thanks, I chose to leave the stain, but toned it down a bit, as I was going for realism.

Well done on this shot. Nice light angle to give the 3D effect on the angel and a good composition. I like how the angel stands out, yet the tree in the background is there for us to take in without distracting from the angel.

Rust? It's a picture of a neglected yard statue - so rust fits.

I do not get all of the hate for the rust on this photo either, I think it's what makes it interesting. Personal preference I suppose.

Thanks JGR, and mtuepker, the "rust" is what caught my eye from a distance and made me walk over to see what it was.

I like it. You captured the statue nicely. Nice detial, nicely exposed... And I agree that that rust stains and grime are what make this photo look real. Overall though; it's a photo of a statue, a beautiful statue mind you, but just a statue. It doesn't really envoke much interest from me, but that's just me. Generally I think it's a nice shot.

It's tough to get compositional merit out of a closeup like this. It is interesting, and the rust/weathering is what makes it more so. The only thing I would have done differently is to get lower so it would look like she was looking down at you.

Thanks, and that is a good thought, I might re-visit this one.

Its a nice picture of the statue, but a little boring... Here's a thought, if this was taken horizontal frame, tree and statue to the left side almost the same as here, maybe moving a little to your left.

The angels hand and wing are pointed to the right (her left) so the eye moves to that side and sees what else is there in the frame (in the one above it just ends at the right edge). If its a dark background of trees that would work. Even better would be something else that works as a counterpoint in the lower right hand side of the image.

Good ideas from all, thanks! I will be taking this shot again :) I'll post up my revision to this thread (probably Wednesday night)

Some places sell this stuff pre-aged now. I was in a store yesterday and saw a pre-rusted, beat to hell hoe for $30.
