I rarely get the chance to shoot men's fashion, Jay hit me up about 2 weeks ago and we had a great shoot today... this is one of the photos - about half way through that he was really keen on. He's an up-and-coming guy mostly doing runway but trying for more print / lifestyle work.

  • 5' octabox on camera right
  • Silver umbrella really high, camera left behind him for hair light / rear fill
  • Gold reflector below octabox on camera right leaning against the light stand to give a little bit of fill from the the reflection off the hair light.
5d2, 50mm f/1.8 @ f/11, 1/160th, LR3 for post.

From the start of the session - kinda pissed, his slacks were wrinkled beyond belief so every full body shot I have is basically worthless - but these I'm fairly happy with. He wanted a higher fashion / GQ style to them, to me that meant hard lighting, something I wish I could shoot more of but it doesn't always match the subject matter.

22" silver beauty dish to camera right, about 7-7.5' off the ground, no other lighting. 5d2, 100mm f/2, LR3 for post processing

I'm not thrilled with how the tie looks and may go back in and try to burn it down a bit more, in real life it was actually that shiny due to the high quality silk used and the color, but in the photo it's a bit distracting.

nice lighting in 1, the tie in 2 does look odd (like it's got a stain on it)

Sometimes even the subject is appealing in actual when it gets through the lens it doesn't get its original appeal.. Just like what happen to your subject's tie..
