is a used 40d worth the upgrade to the 1000d/XS? the feel of the XS is just so small compared to the 40/50/60d's

I shot on a 40D for years, and I still have it after upgrading to a 7D. In my opinion, the 40D is one of the best cameras ever made. it's solid, well featured and reliable in my experience. I'd definitely make the upgrade.

Thanks for the reply. I bought the XS like 2.5 years ago to see if I really would like shooting with a DSLR, and I love it. I am just wondering if the image quality would go up that much more with the 40d. and I know that the structure of the 40d is much better than the xs

I went from an XSi to the 40D several months ago and have never looked back. I love the feel of it in my hands and the layout of the controls.

You will see no difference in image quality, as they share a sensor and underlying electronics. The 40D has a much larger buffer for burst shooting.

The LiveView in actually more advanced in the XS/1000D, since it has contrast-detect AF. The 40D does not, forcing the camera to lower the mirror, use phase-AF, and then lift the mirror back up to display the image.

I have never had an issue with the quality or performance of the XS, and actually it requires less post work overall, but the 40D is easier to carry in my big fat hands.

Honestly, I'd suggest looking for a 50D so that you have the added security of microadjust.

True, but this method works much faster. The contrast detection method takes forever.

The 50D has microadjust?

In my experience, the contrast detection is faster in practice if you're using AF. If you're using MF, it's a non-issue. Dropping the mirror causes vibration that can throw off focus. I'd prefer the option of being able to see the image while it's focusing. Contrast-detect AF is often more accurate, as well...but yes, much less snappy than standard VF focus.

No Rebel or any xxD camera prior to the 50D has MA. The 60D does not have MA.

some might say i downgraded but i sold my t2i for a 40d and i have no regrets. while it is much older, to me the ergonomics, the higher fps, and build quality is worth it over the newer rebel.

This is what I did. I wanted the bigger body, the pc connection, control wheel, top LCD, more dedicated bottoms, and the faster x-sync. 18 MP? I don't need that right now. If I did more landscape photography, I wouldn't have switched though. But for what I shoot, there is no camera with more bang-for-the-buck.

Image-wise it's probably going to be a wash; but I'd highly recommend going to the 40D (or 50D) simply for the ergonomic improvements. My first dSLR was a 40D, simply because the controls on the Rebels drive me insane.

I kept my 40 as a basic travel and backup body once I moved to the 7D; it's still an awesome camera.

I pulled the trigger on the 40d, got a great price for it with only 8k on the shutter. It definitely will "feel" like a real camera. hahaha :)
