Folks, I want to purchase a notebook for photo editing - Phoshop mostly.
It has to be Windows.
I like the slim design and I am OK with 15'6 screen.

I have nailed it to 2 options that I really like:

1. Sony Vaio VPC with Core i5 2430M and 4 GB RAM. Screen resolution is 1920 x 1080

2. Samsung 7 series with i7-2675QM and 8 GB RAM. Screen resolution is 1600 x 900

Price is very similar, Samsung is a bit more expensive...not by much.

What attracts me in Sony is the Full HD and the rest I like more with Samsung.

What would be the right choice for photo editing?
Thanks!

I just upgraded my screen to 1920X1080 matte and the detail is incredible (but is smaller on the screen). I would recommend the Sony and upgrading your RAM to 8 gb.

6D, G9, Sigma 50 1.4, Sigma 15mm Fisheye, Sigma 50 2.8 macro, Nikon 14-24G 2.8, Canon 16-35 2.8 II, Canon 24-105 f/4 IS, Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, tripod, lights, other stuff.

Was thinking too. Sony has a glossy screen and Samsung has a matte screen

If you buy a Samsung you get a Samsung LCD if you buy a Sony you still get a Samsung LCD.

The thing to consider is if you plan to use the laptop in bright light or outdoors the matte LCD will be easier to view. The i5 also can't hold a candle to the i7 so you can throw 8 exabytes of ram and it wont net you any extra CPU processing power if you need it later on. Finally the video card is important because with laptops you can't just pop it out and upgrade later on. So that is a big consideration you may want to factor into your decision.

Thanks:-) Are you sure that Sony uses Samsung LCD? I was trying to find any information about the Samsung LCD on Series 7 notebooks and review are not very positive, whereas people say that on Sony Vaio SE LCD is superb, considering it is a notebook.

So you are assuming or you know for sure?

Most all of the panels on the market are made by LD, Samsung and Sharp even Apple uses them. Sony actually used to own a 50% stake in Samsung but they decided to exit the LCD business in December. So it's pretty logical any devices on the market right now have a very high chance of being made with a Samsung panel.

I went to see these two yesterday: Sony Vaio SE vs Samsung Series 7 Chronos.

Sony VAIO VPC-SE1E1E/S:
-Full HD 1920 x 1080
-i5-2430M (2.4 GHz, 3 MB Cache)
-RAM 8 GB
-HDD 500 GB
-Graphics: Intel GMA HD 3000 +AMD Radeon HD 6630M (DirectX11, SM 5.0, OpenGL 4.1)

SERIES 7 (NP700Z5A-S02PL):
-1600 x 900
-i7-2675QM (2.2 GHz, 6 MB Cache)
-RAM 8 GB
-HDD 750 GB
-Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M (DirectX11, SM 5.0, OpenGL 4.1)

LCD is much better with Sony, Samsung has better design, build in quality and is more powerful, but is designed in a way that the edge is cutting into your wrist...

Tough choice...

That Samsung is a pretty nice machine, however the screen is pretty bad. Contrast and Viewing angles are not good at all. If you want to do photo editing dont expect to have wonderful results. I dont know how the Sony screen is. I have a lenovo x220 with the IPS screen and its the first laptop usable for photo editing. I have the i5-2540M with 16GB of ram and a 256gb ssd as my main drive and a 120gb msata as a scratch disk

I understand....I wanted to have the slim design and powerful laptop. It is Mac, Samsung, Dell XPS m15z or Sony Vaio SE.

Dell - not as good. Sony has a good resolution, but it feels that the screen will fall apart after 2 days. Mac - we too expensive where I live. Samsung is the only real option and is the most powerful. I will anyway have the IPS external monitor.
