I have a much-loved 40D and a fairly good set of lenses. A lot of what I photograph for pleasure involves movement: kids, dogs, sports, etc. However, I've recently been doing a lot more portraits, and am moving towards paid work (children's parties, family photos). I have a small home studio.

I'm happy with my 40D and don't intend to sell it, but I need a backup camera and have the opportunity to buy a 5D classic at a fairly decent price. Would this be a worthwhile addition, given the kind of images I take, or should I just stay as I am and keep my old XTi as the backup (I'd sell the XTi if I bought the 5D) until I can afford a more recent mode,l which is likely to be at least a couple of years down the line? What do you think? All advice gratefully received.

How many of those lenses are EF-S or crop mount only? Just remember that the 5D is EF and other full frame lenses only.

In your shoes, I'd go for the 5D, for portrait work.

The Tokina and Canon 55-250 won't work on the 5D. Not sure about the Tammy but it is something you need to consider.

Yes, I know these two lenses and the 60 macro wouldn't work on the 5D, but the Tamron, Canon 70-200 and Canon 85 would be fine.

The specific 5D I'm looking at is 3.5 years old and is for sale at $700.

If you get 5D your 28-75, 85 and 70-200 will serve you well even at small home studio. 700 is very good price.

Yes buy it....now. If it is working okay then $700 is a good price. I don't think you will regret it at all.

5d is an excellent camera, at $700 it's also a good deal. Get it, you'll be impressed with the images it produces. I know, I just got one.

Thanks, guys. I'm going to look at it early next week and will buy it unless there's a major problem. Pics show a bit of wear, but nothing serious. At that price, if I don't like it I can resell it without losing money.
