I'm curious as to how many of you who own this lens use a 1.4xTC either (a) regularly or (b) without hesitation. 400mm is about the minimum for good wildlife shooting, and I'm close to pulling the trigger on 1 of 4 lenses, this being one of them. But the 1.4xTC issue is what I'm interested to hear from users. If you have any images to post, let's see 'em. Thanks.

On my 20D, the 100-400 will not autofocus with the Canon 1.4 converter.
When I'm taking a shot of the moon, no problem. Works good. Lasts a long time.

But when I took this set up to a baseball game, I said "S***w this" and took the converter off. I needed the lens to autofocus on the field action.

Overall, the 1.4 seldom gets on the camera because of the AF issue. I understand this issue does not exist with the pro cameras (1D MKII and 1DS)....don't know about the 5D.

FWIW

Regards

Steve

100% crop hand-held (bracing elbows on a picnic table), eyeball-focussed (EXIF included) with the Canon 1.4x TC. Some quality loss due to recompression in getting size acceptable. [edit] Oh, yeah - open shade. No post-processing, straight out of the camera, and maybe with a hamburger in the other hand.

Here's a Yosemite shot I took with the converter on the lens. You can see that it definitely has its advantages:

Bear in mind that a shot taken from the same spot with a 17-40mm was this:
focus spot for zoomed image is above and to the right of the tallest tree in the middle

maybe this will help :)

I tried both a Sigma 1.4 and a Sigma 2.0x with my ex 100-400 L and didn't really like the results too much. It may have been my manual focus skills and using the pinhole sized 350D viewfinder. From memory, my ex Bigma did a much better job at around the 500mm mark. I'd still choose the 100-400 tho' if I wanted to stay at 400mm or so. Very nice lens. I didn't like the huge hood or the push-pull zoom, but I think you know all about that stuff.

I use the cheap Tamron 1.4tc with this lens and at 400mm I don't like the results. It's gets real soft whereas the same tc on a less capable lens seems to do okay.

I use it more often on the !D (where it still retains autofocus). But I won't hesitate to use it on the 20D. Works great.
